Applications are invited for appointments as Professor/Associate Professor on tenure terms and Tenure-Track Assistant Professor in the School of Chinese (several posts) (Ref.: 500470), to commence on September 1, 2021 or as soon as possible thereafter.  Appointments as Assistant Professor will be made on a three-year fixed-term basis, with the possibility of renewal and with consideration for tenure before the expiry of a second three-year fixed-term contract.

The School of Chinese is initiating an ambitious, large-scale academic expansion aimed at recruiting scholars of the highest-calibre who are characterised by an international outlook and whose research commands a global or globally rising reputation. The School aims to fill several professoriate positions from September 2021 onwards at the ranks of Professor and Associate Professor with direct tenure and tenure-track Assistant Professor across the areas of Classical and Modern Chinese Literature, Chinese History (pre-Modern), and Chinese-English Translation. While the School has some needed areas of coverage, the most important hiring criteria are research excellence and outstanding international reputation. We are also open to hiring new colleagues in clusters from the same university. We anticipate that the new hires we make will have an agenda-setting impact on the School, in the region, and globally for the next generation. 

Applicants should be active, internationally recognised researchers in their field. In addition to possessing a substantial track-record of scholarly publications, applicants must be able to demonstrate active projects that promise ongoing intellectual impact and innovation. Successful candidates will also be able to demonstrate an ability and willingness to participate in and support the School’s vibrant research culture.  Appointees at the rank of Professor should be internationally recognised leaders in their field and be willing to provide academic leadership relevant to the School’s operation and strategic development.

With a distinguished tradition of excellence in Chinese Studies, the School values a strong commitment to innovative and inspiring pedagogical practice. Primary teaching responsibilities will be at the undergraduate level, with opportunities to supervise research postgraduate students. A highly competitive salary commensurate with qualifications and experience will be offered, in addition to annual leave and medical benefits.  At current rates, salaries tax does not exceed 15% of gross income.  The appointments will attract a contract-end gratuity and University contribution to a retirement benefits scheme, totaling up to 15% of basic salary.  Housing benefits will be provided as applicable.
