About University

The newly-established Khalifa University of Science and Technology (KU) combines the Masdar Institute of Science and Technology (MI), the Khalifa University of Science, Technology and Research (KUSTAR) and the Petroleum Institute (PI) into one world-class, research-intensive institution, seamlessly integrating research and education to produce world leaders and critical thinkers in applied science and engineering. Khalifa University endeavors to be a leader among research intensive universities of the 21st century, while catalyzing the growth of Abu Dhabi and the UAE’s rapidly developing knowledge economy.

Brief Description

To provide high quality research support and undertake internationally competitive research aimed at publication thereby contributing to the academic and research mission of the University. Ability to present research plans and findings in a convincing style, both in oral and written modes of communication. Develop the ability to understand and share research findings within the group, and establish contacts and network with colleagues

Detailed Description

Strategic Responsibilities

This multidisciplinary project combines applied mathematics, statistics, genomics, and computer science, the combination of which we term “genomic data science” and is closely related to bioinformatics. The goal is to study dimensionality reduction, especially with regard to manifold learning via diffusion. The core project tasks include computational benchmarking and statistical analysis involving both simulation and real biomedical data. Consequently, our approach will enable the efficient discovery of high-order gene interactions and better predictions for common disease.

This position’s project involves the entire data science pipeline for applied predictive modeling, with a focus on developing novel dimensionality reduction techniques for use with genomic data. The Research Associate will be expected to read and understand the current literature involving best bioinformatic practices for dimensionality reduction, and will help in writing some of the analysis computer codes. Their contributions are expected to be substantial enough to research activity to merit authorship on journal articles.

Operational Responsibilities

The research associate will be responsible for writing and analyzing biomedical data, along with the simulated data produced by other members of the group.  They will need to piece together code snippets and algorithms written by Dr. Feng and other members of the research group into analysis tools which can be bench marked and tested for performance. They also need to be able to read scientific papers and understand some current trends in bioinformatics.

Supervisory Responsibilities

The research associate may aid Dr. Feng in the supervising of student-led research projects and in overseeing the team’s research assistant(s) with their duties.
