The Department and role purpose

The Department of Engineering is one of the very best UK Engineering Departments with an outstanding reputation for excellence in teaching, research and employability of our students. Ranked 5th in the Guardian and 7th in the Complete University Guide 2019 in the UK for General Engineering, this dynamic Department of Engineering is an excellent place to pursue your career by contributing to the world leading research activities and the teaching of our enthusiastic student body. Our research is concentrated in the key areas of Future Energy Systems; Advanced Materials, Electronics and Communications; and Sustainable Infrastructure, and is supported by world class facilities. The Department has been targeted for significant growth over the next five years in the University's strategic plan.

The post holder will be directly responsible to the Head of Department and will be expected to deliver the strategic management of the technical support staff and to oversee the management and development of all facilities in the Department. The post holder will proactively engage with both academic and technical support colleagues to ensure that all design, manufacturing, and support services for teaching, research and consulting activities in the Department are provided with an appropriate level of effectiveness.

The post holder will be expected to show leadership in the direction of the large team of technical staff and creativity in meeting the challenges faced in a diverse and successful Engineering Department. The post holder will also be expected to liaise with other central functions to co-ordinate and plan building work and other improvements to departmental facilities. The post holder will also act as the Departmental Health and Safety Co-ordinator.
