Quantum Imaging and Sensing at Mid Infra-red and/or UV/Blue Wavelengths

Job number ACAD104620
Division/School Academic Faculties
Contract type Open Ended
Working pattern Full time
Salary Grade I £33,797- £38,017 Grade J £38,017- £42,792
Closing date for applications 27-Aug-2020

A unique research engineer opportunity is available at the Quantum Engineering Technology Labs (QET Labs) at the University of Bristol. This role will conduct R&D in optical noise suppression, quantum enhanced sensing, quantum imaging and metrology as part of the £27M EPSRC-funded Quantum Technology Hub in Quantum Imaging (QuantIC).

QET Labs is a cluster of quantum-related activities that spans research, training and enterprise. A major thrust of QET Labs across these activities is to bring quantum sensing and imaging technologies out of the lab and into the real world.

You will be a key part of the QuantIC project team at Bristol developing Mid Infra-Red and UV quantum imaging, sensing and detection technologies while working with university researchers and industrial partners. This innovative role will involve bulk optical interferometry, chip-scale development, field trials, low noise detector development and strong links to industry. The project involves the use of Optical Parametric Amplifiers (OPA), non-linear interferometric techniques, four wave mixing in optical fibre, imaging without detection, coherent wavelength conversion, single photon detection and shot noise limited balanced detection & homodyne detection.

The successful applicant will work closely with Profs. John Rarity and Jonathan Matthews and their team as well as engaging with all other members of QET Labs who have experience ranging from photonics device fabrication through to quantum information science theory.

This position is full-time (flexible working options are considered) with the funding end date to be confirmed upon appointment. QET Labs is committed to helping researchers become independent academics and have extensive experience in aiding PDRAs with fellowship applications.
