Department of Translation

The Department of Translation sets out to provide an education in bilingual studies which can nourish graduates with competence in Chinese and English as well as capacity to think independently. One of its central features is the equal emphasis on translation as a profession and as an academic discipline. Another feature is the importance attached to the socio-cultural environment of the Chinese and English languages. The appointee will be required to teach courses in one or more of the following areas: Practical Translation, English through Subtitles, Business Translation, and Translation Theories, and conduct research. Excellent command of written and spoken Chinese and English is a must. The Department invites applications for Research Assistant Professor / Postdoctoral Fellow specializing in translation studies, and preference will be given to those with university teaching experience and international publication records.
- possess a PhD degree in translation studies from a reputable university;
- be able to teach courses at undergraduate and postgraduate levels in translation or interpreting effectively; and
- be able to publish research output with international impact. Applicants should provide information about their work experience, qualifications, research interests and achievements, and a statement of research grant and publication records.
The appointees will
- (a) teach courses at undergraduate and / or postgraduate levels;
- (b) participate in independent research programmes and research grant application pursuit; and
- (c) perform certain administrative duties (such as serving as Undergraduate Advisor) as assigned by the Head of the Department.
The conditions of appointment will be competitive. Remuneration will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. Fringe benefits include annual leave, medical and dental benefits, mandatory provident fund, gratuity, and incoming passage and baggage allowance for the eligible appointee.
Appointments will normally be made on fixed-term contracts of up to two years. Experienced candidate of Postdoctoral Fellow may carry a functional title of Research Assistant Professor.
