Job Description Summary
Reporting jointly to the Dean of the School of Veterinary Medicine and the Associate Vice President for School and Center Programs, the Associate Dean for Advancement will oversee Development, Alumni Relations and Marketing and Communications for the School.
The School of Veterinary Medicine (Penn Vet) is part of the University of Pennsylvania (UPenn), one of the world's top biomedical research and teaching centers. Penn Vet is the only veterinary school in the nation that originated within a medical school. Today, UPenn’s two schools – Penn Vet and Penn Medicine – continue to have close ties in clinical service, research, and curricular design. This connection has enabled Penn Vet to become a global leader in veterinary medicine education, research, and clinical care. The School's mission is to train leaders to advance well-being and healthcare outcomes in animals, ensure global health, bolster sustainable agriculture, and create and support new
interdisciplinary career paths.
The relationship between animal health and human health is the core of education at Penn Vet. The faculty comes from a wide variety of academic backgrounds to teach their students how veterinary medicine and research impacts human lives, as well as those of animals. The curriculum offers learning opportunities and experiences in every aspect of veterinary medicine. Since the first class of 10 graduated in 1887, more than 6,000 veterinarians have graduated from Penn Vet. Graduates receive the degree, Veterinariae Medicinae Doctoris (VMD), which identifies them as Penn Vet graduates, because of the unique medical-school affiliation of the School. The School's alumni work across the nation and around the world to better the health and welfare of animals and humans. Penn Vet faculty conduct groundbreaking research projects ranging in focus from molecular genetics, to the therapeutic potential of stem cells, to the impact of stress on pregnant females. From large to small, from molecular to systemic, research at Penn Vet continues to push the limits of what we know about animals and humans. There are many research centers, programs, and initiatives on campus. Their research centers have produced advances in comparative oncology, infectious disease, neuroscience, and more.
Each of the School's two geographically separate campuses is home to a teaching hospital. Ryan Veterinary Hospital for Companion Animals is on the Philadelphia campus, at the University of Pennsylvania. Ryan Hospital sees close to 35,000 patients a year, including dogs, cats, less common mammals, and exotic animals such as birds, reptiles, and amphibians. The New Bolton Center Hospital is in Kennett Square, PA. The Hospital is one of the nation's foremost large-animal hospitals, treating more than 4,900 patients each year, 85% of which are horses. Both hospitals have emergency services 365 days a year, seven days a week, 24 hours a day.
Reporting jointly to the Dean of the School of Veterinary Medicine and the Associate Vice President for School and Center Programs, the Associate Dean for Advancement will oversee Development, Alumni Relations and Marketing and Communications for the School. Currently in the final public phase of a $130 million fundraising campaign that is part of the University of Pennsylvania’s The Power of Penn comprehensive campaign, the campaign is scheduled for completion in June 2021. The Associate Dean will be responsible for completing this campaign and continuing to promote a series of key strategic and philanthropic priorities that will have needs well beyond the scope of the campaign. The Associate Dean also oversees marketing and communications efforts which are critical to other non-philanthropic revenue streams at the school. In particular, the Marketing and Communications team plays an critical role in the ongoing advocacy efforts related to the school’s important agricultural and wildlife-driven partnership with the State of Pennsylvania and the related state appropriation.
On a managerial front, the role manages a staff of 15 who execute the alumni relations, annual giving, major gift fundraising, marketing and communications functions for the School and both of its hospitals. Collaborating with the University’s central development and alumni relations staff, the Associate Dean will integrate the School’s initiatives with the University's overall fundraising programs.
- Provide strategic oversight to the marketing, communications, publications, development, and constituent relations activities of the School. This includes supervising and mentoring a fifteen-member Advancement, Alumni Relations and Communications staff.
- Provide leadership in shaping and integrating the fundraising and communications functions into a cohesive strategy to advance the mission of Penn Vet. Including marketing for the Ryan and New Bolton Animal Hospitals.
- Cultivate, steward, and solicit major and principal gifts for the School with a primary focus on the School's $1+ million prospects. Personally cultivate, solicit, and steward donors when appropriate.
- Develop metrics and strategies for pursuing major gift opportunities with an emphasis on grateful client/patient fundraising.
- Analyze and evaluate potential funding sources for the long- and short-range goals of the School; develop and implement strategies to secure funding from such sources. Prioritize and expand the prospect pool, and design and execute strategies to maximize the School’s prospect pool over time.
- With the Dean, and School and University leadership, establish and execute a plan to engage and expand the School’s Board of Overseers, its leadership volunteer organization. Including engaging the Dean, faculty, staff, and volunteers to execute the cultivation, solicitation and stewardship activities for prospects and donors.
- Serve as a member of the Dean’s senior administrative leadership team and participate in key School-wide initiatives where Advancement is a meaningful partner.
- A A BA/BS degree and minimum of ten years of successful fundraising experience including a proven record of success in major gifts fundraising, with increasingly more responsible fundraising duties, preferably at a major research university comparable to Penn., or an equivalent combination of education/experience.
- A preference for familiarity with and appreciation of the role and mission of the School of Veterinary Medicine and its relationship to the University, as well as understanding of the equine industry; capacity to articulate that role and interact comfortably with those individuals and constituency groups - faculty, veterinarians, clients for both the Matthew J. Ryan Veterinary Hospital (for companion animals) and New Bolton Center, the school's large animal facility in Chester County, students, and others crucial to the advancement of Veterinary Medicine at Penn.
- Demonstrated track record in the identification, cultivation, and stewardship of major gifts ($100,000+). A demonstrated ability to analyze funding sources and relate their potential to the School's long-range goals; more particularly, to organize practical strategies to identify new prospects and to bring closure to gift and grant opportunities is required.
- Solid administrative and management skills along with the ability to establish objectives, set performance standards, and organize and motivate staff, faculty, and volunteers to achieve fundraising goals.
- Strong experience in establishing effective relationships with volunteers.
- Strong written and oral communication skills.
- Adaptability, flexibility, and diplomacy. Experience working in a complex yet highly collaborative environment will be of value.
- Ability to function independently yet relate comfortably to a centralized framework for fundraising, participating in and contributing to a total team effort. High motivation and a capacity for hard work within the context of a goal-driven environment.
- Development experience in healthcare and the health sciences, as well as grateful, patient fundraising is highly desirable.
- Ability to travel locally and nationally; a valid driver's license is required.
