About the Department of Chemical Engineering
We are a large Department with approximately 25 teaching and research staff, 30 full time research staff and around 90 PhD students.
Academic staff have been elected as Fellows of the Royal Society, the world's oldest scientific society, the Australian Academy of Science, and the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering.
Industry Engagement is a key focus, and we carry out research projects based on deep collaborations with government and business and work with organisations that provide internship opportunities for our students.

We are seeking a versatile and enthusiastic Research Fellow to play a meaningful role in an innovative research project, developing solutions for a global priority in health care. The successful candidate will join the Polymer Science Group in a collaboration with the Melbourne Dental School, working on the development of antimicrobial synthetic polypeptides with a range of applications in medicine.
This is an exciting opportunity to develop a new research field in the medical area and to partner with other researchers and collaborators to achieve project goals. Along with undertaking original research you will also have the opportunity to work on other projects currently being conducted.
You Will Be
An experienced synthetic chemist comfortable working with biomaterials, with basic knowledge of polymers and their relationship with bacteria. You will have demonstrated initiative with an ability to manage your research effectively and to achieve project milestones. You will use your excellent written and verbal communication skills to communicate your research findings, including for publication in scholarly journals. Your strong interpersonal skills will enable you to build and maintain relationships with partners.
You Will Have
- A PhD Degree or equivalent in Chemical Engineering or a related field
- Demonstrated practical skills in material/polymer synthesis and/or microbiology tests;
- Experience in a range of spectroscopic and physical analysis techniques, including most or all of NMR, FTIR, MS, GPC, HPLC, antimicrobial assays, and bacterial growth, or a demonstrated ability to learn instrumental techniques.
