Associate Professor/ Professor within Energy Storage for Future Energy Systems
About the position
We are looking for an Associate Professor or Professor within the field of energy storage for future energy systems at the Department of Energy and Process Engineering (EPT), at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU). The position will be based within the Sustainable Energy Systems research group, which is one of four research groups within EPT.
Based on current trends, sustainable future energy systems will provide more electrical energy than chemical energy, compared to energy systems of the past. A major challenge in the supply of
sustainable energy for future cities and smart energy societies is efficient and adaptive energy storage systems. The Sustainable Energy Systems Research Group wishes to strengthen its research and teaching activities in renewable energy systems, energy storage, and energy for zero emission communities. We are therefore looking for enthusiastic and internationally ambitious candidates to conduct research in energy storage for future energy systems. As the energy landscape is constantly shifting, we are looking for candidates who can show originality and flexibility in their research and adapt to new research developments and the funding environment. The candidate should have the ambition to develop their own internationally competitive research portfolio as well as being proactive in collaborating with other members of the Sustainable Energy Systems research group.
About the Sustainable Energy Systems group:
The SES research group covers a wide range of topic within the field of energy storage for future energy systems, including hydrogen systems, hydrogen for e-fuels, lithium ion battery systems and battery cell production, energy flow cells, energy systems of buildings, and district heating.
Currently, research activities in relation to energy storage are hydrogen systems, hydrogen in synthetic fuel production, battery systems, battery production processing, and district heating
systems. The group is also responsible for Bachelor and Masters level teaching across a wide range of subjects, e.g. renewable energy, energy storage, sustainable energy, energy in the built
environment, thermodynamics, mechanical engineering, and the successful candidate will be expected to undertake teaching commitments.
The professors in the research group report to head of department.
Duties of the position
- Develop an internationally recognized research track record through publication in high impact journals and participation at international conferences.
- Attract research funding through applications to national and international funding bodies, as well as manage research projects.
- Supervision of PhD and postdoctoral fellowships.
- Teaching courses related to the Bachelor and Master engineering programmes within mechanical engineering, energy in buildings, sustainable energy systems, renewable energy, and future energy.
- Supervision of Bachelor and Master student theses within the built environment or renewable energy.
Required selection criteria
The position of Professor requires university education at doctoral level in the field and demonstrable academic excellence in the relevant subject area. The applicant’s research must be documented and of high, international quality, showing both breadth and depth. Research activity and output must demonstrate an independent research profile and the ability to take up new research issues. Continuous research activity is a prerequisite for professorial positions. Strong emphasis will be placed on publication of research results in recognized international journals within the subject area. The greatest emphasis is placed on academic work undertaken during the past five years, excluding statutory leave. Emphasis will be placed on ability and experience in initiating and leading research and development of the field of area, and in obtaining external funding for research. Emphasis will also be placed on a documented commitment to teaching, development of teaching materials, and supervision of students at all levels.
The position of Associate Professor requires university education at doctoral level in the field and demonstrable academic excellence in the relevant subject area. Emphasis will be placed on ability and experience in initiating and leading research in the subject area. Strong emphasis will be placed on publication of research results in recognized international journals within the subject area. Particular focus will be placed on academic work during the past five years, excluding statutory leave.
In addition to formal qualifications in teaching at university level, you must document
- development in teaching and counselling of students
- supervision experience at the master / PhD level
- participation in the development of educational quality in a work environment
Associate and full professor:
In the assessment of the best-qualified applicant, we will emphasize education, experience and personal suitability as well as your motivation for the position. You will be expected to deliver high-quality teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, and undertake supervision of Bachelor, Master, and Doctoral candidates. Evaluation of these skills will be based on documented experience and relevant teaching qualifications. Applicants with teaching experience at university level are preferred. Quality and breadth of the teaching qualifications will be evaluated.
You must document relevant basic competence for teaching and supervision at university/higher education-level, ref. Regulations. If this cannot be documented, you are required to complete an approved course in university teaching within two years of commencement. NTNU offers qualifying courses.
It is a prerequisite that within three years of appointment, new employees who do not speak a Scandinavian language can demonstrate skills in Norwegian or another Scandinavian language equivalent to level three in the course for Norwegian for speakers of other languages at the Department of Language and Literature at NTNU.

Salary and conditions
In a position as Associate Professor (code 1011) you will normally be remunerated from gross NOK 600 000 to NOK 900 000 per year, depending on qualifications and seniority. In a position as Professor (code 1013) you will normally be remunerated from gross NOK 700 000 to NOK 1 000 000 per year, depending on qualifications and seniority. From the salary, 2% is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.
The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants, and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology. Candidates who by assessment of the application and attachment are seen to conflict with the criteria in the latter law will be prohibited from recruitment to NTNU. After the appointment, you must assume that there may be changes in the area of work.
It is a prerequisite that you can be present at and accessible to the institution daily.
