Role Description

We are seeking an independent researcher to join us to work on an exciting project which is a part of UK-India grant on Industrial Waste Challenge.

The Centre for Climate and Environmental works towards finding solutions to overcome the challenges in managing biomass and waste as valuable resources leading to affordable and sustainable production of valuable products. It has an internationally recognized profile for its research and teaching in biomass & waste, renewable energy, biofuels, waste management and resource efficiency. You will hugely benefit from its world class staff with a wealth of internationally recognized experience and facilities.

The project will be leveraging on state-of-the-art systematic metabolic engineering and industrial synthetic biology methodologies to design a robust microbial cell factory for prolonged continuous fermentation for accumulation of high value chemicals using biomass hydrolysate as fermentation medium. The overall objective would be to design a sustainable and cost effective bioprocess for metabolite production. In addition, you will assist in proposal writing and supervision of PhD and Master Students.

This is a multi-disciplinary project and the work will involve fermentation based biomanufacturing of chemical building block from waste streams from sugarcane industries.

You should have a PhD (or near completion) in Biological Sciences (Microbiology/Biotechnology/Biochemical Engineering or related discipline) with strong expertise in Metabolic Engineering as evidenced by high quality publications in international peer-reviewed journals.

You should have detailed knowledge in microbial biochemistry, genetics, metabolism, physiology, molecular Biology and analytical techniques. You will have strong skills in bacterial and/or yeast genetics and synthetic and/or molecular biology allied to strong interests in genome editing and metabolic engineering aligned with industrial biotechnology milieu. Being an UK-India project, the candidate will have opportunity to visit India to attend annual meetings and/or for conducting research as a visiting fellow.
