About the position 

A two-year full time Postdoctoral Fellowship is available at the Chemosensory lab, Department of Psychology. We are looking for a candidate with expertise within the area of sensory neuroscience. The postdoc will participate in design and execution of experiments aimed to investigate basic principles underlying multisensory integration including input from olfaction and other sensory modalities in a moth brain. Experimental methods including electrophysiological (intracellular/extracellular) recording/staining, calcium imaging, and confocal microscopy in combination with neural reconstruction/modeling, will be used.

Applicants should have knowledge about neural principles underlying general brain function and be acquainted with the above-mentioned techniques. Previous experience from working with the small insect brain is advantageous. We can offer incorporation in a vital research group including other research fellows and PhDs. In addition to the experimental work, the post-doc will participate in supervision of master students.

Duties of the position

The candidate will participate actively in the research carried out at the Chemosensory lab where the main aim is to understand neural principles typifying encoding of odor information. We expect the candidate to contribute with:

  • Design and implementation of experimental studies
  • Preparation of scientific articles for internationally acknowledged journals.
  • Presentation of scientific data on conferences and meetings.
  • Dissemination of scientific data to audiences outside academia
  • Participation and contribution to the overall activity of the research unit.
  • Supervision of master students.

Required selection criteria

A postdoctoral research fellowships is a qualification position in which the main objective is qualification for work in academic positions. You must have completed a Norwegian doctoral degree in neuroscience or corresponding foreign doctoral degree recognized as equivalent to a Norwegian doctoral degree.

If, for any reason, you have taken a career break or have had an atypical career and wish to disclose this in your application, the selection committee will take this into account, recognizing that the quantity of your research may be reduced as a result.

The appointment is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants and national guidelines for appointment as PhD, post doctor and research assistant.

In addition to possessing good oral and written skills in English, the candidate should have a publication record comprising scientific articles of international standard, preferably including electrophysiological studies.

Preferred selection criteria

Experience from central experimental methods within neuroscience:

  • Intracellular recording/staining
  • Confocal microscopy
  • Modelling neural strictures by means of visualization software, such as AMIRA
  • Calcium imaging measurements

Knowledge about:

  • Statistical methods
  • Programming, acquaintance with Phyton, Matlab, or R

Personal characteristics

  • Good interpersonal skills
  • Inquisitiveness
  • Reliability and accuracy
  • Independence

Salary and conditions

The employment period is 2 years.

Postdoctoral candidates are placed in code 1352, and are normally remunerated at gross from NOK 542 400 per annum before tax, depending on qualifications and seniority. From the salary, 2% is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.

The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants, and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology. Candidates who by assessment of the application and attachment are seen to conflict with the criteria in the latter law will be prohibited from recruitment to NTNU. After the appointment you must assume that there may be changes in the area of work.

The position is subject to external funding.

It is a prerequisite you can be present at and accessible to the institution on a daily basis.
