Job Description Summary

Reporting to the Head of Global Studies Technical Services, and working closely with the South Asia Library Specialist, the South Asia Technical Services Clerk will assist in the technical processing of South Asian language materials for the Penn Libraries in accordance with established workflows. Job duties include: searching for bibliographic information; updating bibliographic information as directed; maintaining holdings records; creating and linking item records; barcoding physical inventory; and additional clerical duties as required. The incumbent will also assist the unit in the creation of bibliographic metadata in the South Asian language of their expertise.

Job Description

Reporting to the Head of Global Studies Technical Services, and working closely with the South Asia Library Specialist, the South Asia Technical Services Clerk will assist in the technical processing of South Asian language materials for the Penn Libraries in accordance with established workflows. Job duties include: searching for bibliographic information; updating bibliographic information as directed; maintaining holdings records; creating and linking item records; barcoding physical inventory; and additional clerical duties as required. The incumbent will also assist the unit in the creation of bibliographic metadata in the South Asian language of their expertise.

Primary responsibilities may include but are not limited to:

  • Perform routine searches of Penn Libraries catalogs (Franklin & Alma) and external bibliographic utilities (e.g. OCLC Connexion) for bibliographic information.
  • Unboxes newly acquired materials (with occasional lifting of boxes), verifies contents against packing lists, and arranges books on storage shelves.
  • Under direction of the Head of Global Studies Technical Services or the South Asia Library Specialist, update bibliographic, holdings, and items records to assist in the cataloging process.
  • Process physical inventory, including flagging and barcoding of library items, transporting book trucks through Penn Libraries spaces, and maintaining order in shelving areas.
  • Work collegially and collaboratively with student assistants.
  • Participate in regular meetings of the unit as scheduled hours permit.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required Qualifications:

  • Strong knowledge of at least one South Asian language and its script.
  • Basic computer skills in a Windows computing environment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Strong knowledge of additional South Asian languages and scripts.
  • Experience in a library setting working with bibliographic data.
  • Ability to identify problems and willingness to assist in implementing solutions.
  • Experience manipulating spreadsheet data (e.g. Microsoft Excel).
