The Additive Microstructure Engineering Laboratory in the school of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at NTU (Singapore) is a young, diverse, and interdisciplinary research group with interests in microstructure characterization of polycrystalline metals (AddME Lab). We are developing a novel technique called Directional Reflectance Microscopy (DRM) that enables high-throughput crystal orientation mapping using a simple optical microscope. We seek a highly motivated individual to work on this project as Research Fellow.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Expand DRM capabilities to structural alloys, including Inconel 718, stainless steel, and Ti64
  • Perform etching and update the data analysis algorithms to infer crystallographic information from such alloys
  • Use DRM as an in-situ characterization tool to assess structure-property relationships in these materials (e.g. focusing on corrosion, plasticity, and grain growth)


  • PhD in Materials Science and Engineering
  • Prior knowledge and hands-on experience in Crystallography and characterization of metal alloys (e.g. X-ray and/or electron diffraction, metallography, polycrystalline microstructures)
  • MATLAB or Python (e.g. image analysis, data visualization, dimensionality reduction)
  • Plasticity in polycrystalline materials; or corrosion and electrochemical properties of metals; or grain growth and grain boundary crystallography-property relationships
  • Excellent level of spoken and written English
  • High quality publication record in relevant journals
