Job Description Summary

Teacher, Penn Children's Center. The University of Pennsylvania's Children's Center is for children ages three moths to five years. Located on the University campus, the Center is administered by the Department of Business Services at Penn.

Job Description

This position is a key member of our large team and as a member of the team is responsible for supporting the basic philosophy of Penn Children's Center, "learning through play." The role is responsible for fostering the cognitive, social, emotional and physical development of each child. The successful applicant will be responsible to teach, guide and supervise children 12 weeks to 5 years in accordance with NAEYC, Keystone Stars and DPW guidelines. Prepares monthly classroom newsletter, prepare and execute reports, parent communication and parent teacher conferences at least 2x per year using the chosen Center assessment tool, timely emails and meetings when necessary. Arrange and maintain educational equipment and materials, log daily activities, keep necessary records, prepare student reports and communicate with parents on a daily basis, demonstrate responsiveness to any concerns. Responsibilities include training part-time support staff and supervision of all staff assigned to the classroom. Required to maintain a Professional Development Record and to meet all training mandates. The individual in this leadership position coordinates the team to ensure the daily provision of quality care services. Applications are strongly encouraged from individuals in minority groups.

Qualifications:

A Bachelor's Degree in Early Childhood Education, Child Development, Family Studies, EC Special Education, Elementary Education plus 3-5 years experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience required. A Bachelor's Degree outside the early childhood field must be supplemented by at least 3 years of experience in a NAEYC accredited program, or at least 3 years of experience in a non-accredited program and at least 30 hours of relevant training during the past 3 years. Excellent understanding of early childhood development and knowledge of early childhood/education standards required. Demonstrated ability to supervise, lead and develop a professional team. Strong communication, collaboration and nurturing skills together with experience working with a diverse group of families. Evidence of initiative and adaptability to change. Evidence of a commitment to early childhood and continued professional development. Flexibility to work during Center opening hours as required to ensure appropriate service provision and to meet licensing ratio (ie. normally between 7:30am-7:00pm). Skills in language, art, music and drama highly regarded. A comprehensive background check will be undertaken for this position.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develop, implement and lead daily lesson plans that are age appropriate, linking curriculum to the Early Learning Standards. Coordinate the classroom team to ensure that daily provision of quality care services. Complete daily activity logs and monthly classroom newsletters. Arrange and maintain education equipment materials.
  • Teach, guide, and supervise children, aged 12 weeks to 5 years, in a safe and nurturing environment that is conducive to learning, while also meeting all NAEYC, Keystone Stars and DHS standards and complying with University policies and guidelines, including the maintenance of necessary records.
  • Consistently demonstrate and work within the Core Values of the Division of Business Services. Demonstrate the ability to work in a collaborative manner within a team structure, recognizing and embracing workplace diversity.
  • Attend all staff meetings, parent/teacher conferences and special Center wide events. Attend field trips, attend all staff training while maintaining you Professional Development Record, and keep abreast of latest professional practices.
  • Communicate with parents on a daily basis to build a strong relationship and connection between teachers and parent(s), recognizing the need for parental engagement as a Center goal. Prepare individual, semiannual parent/teacher conference materials using the Center assessment tool. Utilize class list serve to keep parents abreast of all classroom news.
