Genetics Counselor B

Job Description Summary

This position will support research and administrative activities within the Department of Medicine, Division of Translational Medicine and Human Genetics. The position will be part time (24 hrs./week) and is grant-funded. The position is contingent upon funding.

Duties: The Study Genetic Counselor (SGC) will be the primary Genetic Counselor participating in a NCI-funded grant focused on identifying and testing young adult cancer patients. The GC will participate in all aspects of study design, such as designing patient education, working with the cancer genetics counselors across Penn Medicine to assess and implement flow for the patients, designing clinical and research database modules associated with return of results. The GC will be responsible for providing genetic counseling to study participants for whom genetic counseling is recommended and have not previously worked with a GC. Working with a research coordinator, the GC will also assist in coordinating genetic counseling and testing result visits, prepare and maintain clinical documentation records securely, assist patients with insurance reimbursement and pre-authorization for genetic test ordered, including appropriate proof of medical necessity. The GC will also update the study database and patient electronic medical record with genetic counseling and testing updates as needed. Additionally, the GC will attend weekly staff meetings. The GC will have the opportunity to author and co-author publications and abstracts for national meetings, and lead targeted research projects as part of the overall study.

Minimum qualifications for this role:

• Master's Degree in Genetic Counseling from an ABGC accredited program and 2 years of experience required.
• Must possess ABGC certification or be board-eligible and pass the certification exam within the first year of employment. Must be eligible to apply for genetic counseling state licensure.
