Bioinformatician (Research Associate) in the Laboratory of Foo Jia Nee.

Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine (LKCMedicine) established in September 2010 is a partnership between Imperial College London and Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. The School operates from two campuses – Yunnan Campus at Nanyang Technological University and a new campus to be built at Novena. Our primary healthcare partner is the National Healthcare Group (NHG) which comprises an integrated network of primary healthcare polyclinics, acute care hospitals such as Tan Tock Seng Hospital, and national specialist centres. LKCMedicine delivers a new five-year undergraduate medical programme leading to a joint MBBS degree awarded by Imperial College London and Nanyang Technological University.

We are recruiting highly motivated individuals with a strong interest in bioinformatics and human genetics for the position of bioinformatician (Research Associate) in our lab. These positions are also suitable for individuals with future plans to pursue a PhD degree in life sciences. Our lab is currently based at Genome Institute of Singapore, A*STAR, Biopolis.

Responsibilities include:

  • Writing scripts and developing pipelines for next-generation sequencing (NGS) data processing for both DNA and RNA sequencing experiments, including read mapping, variant calling, annotation and statistical analyses.
  • Processing of data from genome-wide SNP genotyping and imputation
  • Exploration of existing and latest methods for analysis and interpretation of single cell RNA and DNA sequencing data.
  • Organization and management of large-scale datasets in the laboratory
  • Discuss with team members and collaborators regarding study design
  • Assisting team members and collaborators in work that requires scripting, data processing, statistical analysis or the use of bioinformatics webtools.

Basic qualifications:

Candidates should have a Master’s degree in bioinformatics, statistics, computer science or other fields of biomedical sciences (with strong background in coding as described below).

Other requirements:

  • Proficient in programming (Java, C/C++, Perl, Python, R, Unix shell scripts)
  • Familiarity with high performance computing platforms and clusters, statistical software (e.g. SPSS/SAS) and bioinformatics webtools.
  • Background knowledge and understanding of molecular/cell biology will be a major advantage
  • Prior research experience in statistics, genetics or transcriptomics will be an advantage
  • Prior experience in handling large next-generation sequencing/genotyping datasets will be an advantage
  • Quick learner with excellent organization and communication skills
  • Ability to work well independently and also effectively as part of a team

The Fellowship will be awarded concurrently with the candidate's appointment as a research staff in NTU.

• Excellent academic records and research potential.

Terms and Conditions:

• In addition to an attractive remuneration, the successful candidate will be awarded a research grant of S$180,000 for research consumables and research related expenditure.
