This is an exciting opportunity to work in a truly interdisciplinary, international project, conducting research into energy network resilience with multiple stakeholders to develop proposals for coordinated urban service delivery interventions. Working with partners in South Africa, Uganda and Sierra Leone, this role will examine energy networks to understand their resilience, their relationship to water, sanitation, and other critical infrastructure networks, and develop delivery models for improved service provision.

You will have a strong background in social sciences, able to work with stakeholders in communities, local and national authorities and utilities. You will have experience of energy systems and networks, on- and off-grid. Ideally you will have had some experience working in international development contexts, including with informal energy systems. You will be required to specify, collect and analyse data, engage with stakeholders, co-design system interventions and develop monitoring and evaluation mechanisms. You will be able to communicate ideas to a wide audience, author reports and academic journal papers, and maintain accurate and complete data records. You will be able to travel to Sierra Leone and Uganda to carry out field work together with local teams.

Beyond the Networked City is a 3-year ESRC-funded Global Challenge Research Fund project, co-producing research with partners at Loughborough University, the African Centre for Cities in Cape Town, Sierra Leone Urban Research Centre, Freetown, and Makerere University, Kampala. You will be working within the Electrical Energy Management Group, a world-leading group undertaking research into low-carbon electrical systems and will interface with many other research groups across the university. You will contribute to the interdisciplinary research from the Cabot Institute for the Environment, a University Research Institute, which is a community of over 600 experts that are focussed on research to protect our planet and identify ways of living better with our planet.
