Job Details

Applications are invited for a temporary post of a UCD Post-Doctoral Research Fellow Level 1 or 2 within UCD School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering

5G has been the spotlight of the mobile technology in 2019 where first commercial 5G networks were rolled out across the globe. The development of the future 5G releases is ongoing and aims to address many challenging requirements, two of which are optimised energy consumption and enhanced wireless security. The two targets complement to achieve sustainable economic growth but cannot be obtained by simply modifying existing wireless communications protocols, which are driven by simplicity rather than by optimality. There is therefore an urgent need for the design of new transmission strategies and network architectures that can simultaneously achieve the two above targets.

The aim of this project is to apply advanced optimisation techniques to deliver on optimised energy consumption and enhanced wireless security. Network densification is inevitable for future wireless networks and a new network architecture of particular interest is cell-free massive MIMO that has the potential to form the backbone for beyond 5G. One of the main goals of this project to characterize the fundamental performance limits of the cell-free massive MIMO technology in many aspects. Also, the project leverages unique fading characteristic of wireless channels to design protocols and mechanisms at the physical layer for enhanced wireless security.
