Department of English Language and Literature

The HKBU Department of English Language and Literature was established in 1956. It is among the most internationally-facing units in the Faculty of Arts, delivering world-leading teaching and research expertise in phonetics and phonology, world Englishes, tonal amusics, Hong Kong studies, literary theory, comparative literature, and global literary modernisms. The Department is an important stakeholder in the Faculty’s recently redesigned Theatre Studies minor programme as well as its inter-disciplinary and collaborative Faculty Niche Research Areas in Performance Studies and Creativity, Self, and Society.

Full Professor / Associate Professor / Assistant Professor in World Theatre Studies (1 open-rank position) (PR0404/19-20)

The Department is now seeking applications for the above position.

Applicants from all areas of the discipline will be considered, with particular interest in candidates possessing substantial experience in African- and/or Asian-based theatre studies. Preferred candidates will bring an established track-record in the teaching and scholarship of theatre practice, including evidence of success in conveying local values, traditions, and resources to international audiences. Recent PhD graduates presenting strong or forward potential in these areas may also be considered.

In addition, candidates possessing expertise in at least two of the following areas/clusters are encouraged to apply: (i) emerging traditions in world theatre; (ii) performance technology, including theatre-related applications for big data, digital curation, and virtual/immersive platforms; (iii) theories and aesthetics of world theatre, pedagogy, and performance; (iv) comparative literary approaches to world theatre; (v) theatre and disability studies.

The appointee will undertake undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, and will be expected to sustain an on-going and active research programme including peer-reviewed publication output and the submission of grant applications. S/he will also be responsible for undergraduate (Bachelor’s-level) honours project supervision as well as the directing of postgraduate dissertations at the Master’s and Doctoral levels. The appointee will also be expected to take on administrative duties.

Applicants should possess a PhD in Theatre Studies or other relevant fields and have an established research and publication record appropriate to rank. Evidence of credible teaching experience at the tertiary level, including the demonstration of positive impact upon students and the wider community, will also be considered favorably.

Initial appointment will be offered on a fixed-term contract of three years with the possibility of renewal subject to mutual agreement and availability of funding.

Rank and salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
