About the position

The Department of Teacher Education is announcing two permanent full-time positions as Associate Professor of Literature and Culture in English.

  • Associate Professor in Children’s Literature and Young Learners
  • Associate Professor in English Literature and Culture

The positions are based in the Section of English and Foreign Languages. The Section is responsible for teaching modules as part of the 5-year integrated programme for a Master’s in Primary and Secondary Education.

The department offers three different programmes: Primary Education: Grades 1-7, Secondary Education: Grades 5-10, and Secondary Education: Grades 8-13. The department also offers a post-graduate certificate of education, a 2-year programme offering a Master’s in Foreign Language Education and inservice
courses in English for teachers in primary and secondary school.

You will report to The Head of Section for English and Foreign Languages

Duties of the position

  • Teach literature and culture in English within different study programmes
  • Assist in further developing the subject area and teaching programme, including continuing education and in-service courses
  • Supervise master students, doctoral candidates and research fellows in his/her discipline, as well as supervising students during their practicum
  • Research within his/her professional field and contribute to relevant research groups
  • Initiate new research projects and contribute to applications for funding
  • Develop and build research networks
  • Work on administrative tasks
  • Administrate the courses and subject area with the other academic staff

Required selection criteria

The Associate Professor of Literature and Culture in English position requires that one meets
the criteria as listed in Regulations concerning appointment and promotion to teaching and
research posts section 1-4.

  • A PhD in literature and/or culture in English is required. Applicants who can document that they are in the final stages of their PhD will be evaluated for the position.
  • Teaching experience from teacher education or other relevant foreign institutions of education is required.

You must document relevant basic competence for teaching and supervision at university/higher education-level, ref. Regulations. You should also be able to document your teaching development and your supervision of students over time, and participation in development of educational quality. If this cannot be documented, you are required to complete an approved course in university teaching within two years of commencement. NTNU offers qualifying courses. 

It is a prerequisite that within three years of appointment, new employees who do not speak a Scandinavian language can demonstrate skills in Norwegian or another Scandinavian language equivalent to level three in the course for Norwegian for speakers of other languages at the Department of Language and Literature at NTNU.

Preferred selection criteria

  • Research relevant to schools and/or teacher education will be emphasized in the assessment.
  • Applicants with documented ability to publish in recognized international academic journals within their subject area will be prioritized. Research from the past five years excluding any statutory leave of absence will be given particular weight.
  • The ability to initiate and lead research and development will also be emphasized.
  • Pedagogical skills and qualifications will be emphasized. Assessment will be based on documented teaching material, the form and quality of the scientific work, teaching experience, supervision of master and doctoral students, and other pedagogical experience.
  • Practical pedagogical education or equivalent is desired.
  • Teaching experience in the Norwegian school system is desired.
  • Experience using ICT in an educational context is desired.

We offer 

Salary and conditions

In a position as Associate Professor (code 1011) you will normally be remunerated from gross NOK 600,000 to NOK 705,000 per year, depending on qualifications and seniority. From the salary, 2% is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.

The position will be offered in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants, and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology. Candidates who by assessment of the application and attachment are seen to conflict with the criteria in the latter law will be prohibited from recruitment to NTNU. After the appointment, you must assume that there may be changes in the area of work.

The position requires that you are present and accessible to the university on a daily basis.

In the assessment of the best-qualified applicant, we will emphasize education, experience and personal suitability as well as your motivation for the position. You will be expected to deliver high-quality teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, and undertake supervision of Masters and Doctoral candidates. Evaluation of these skills will be based on documented experience and relevant teaching qualifications. Applicants with teaching experience at university level are preferred. Quality and breadth of the teaching qualifications will be evaluated.

We also consider experience from research management and participation in research projects. We place great emphasis on your scientific work from the last five years.

Your application will be considered by an expert committee. Shortlisted candidates will be invited for an interview and will be asked to prepare a short lecture intended for a student audience.
