Description

The University of Chicago, a private research university in Chicago Illinois, seeks a bold, rigorous scholar and transdisciplinary collaborative leader to be the next Director of the MacLean Center for Clinical Medical Ethics. Positioned inside the Division of Biological Sciences and the Pritzker School of Medicine, the Center is an eminent, founding institution in the field of clinical medical ethics, whose leaders and programs have established the field, produced its practitioners, and over the last half-century, effected a profound influence on clinical care.

This is a critical moment for the Center as its founder, Dr. Mark Siegler, internationally known and respected physician-leader and scholar who is viewed as a pioneer in the field of clinical medical ethics, steps down after a successful 37-year tenure. The search for the next director is an exceptional and rare opportunity to take the helm of a ship well steered and propel the institution forward into the future. MacLean’s is a vital program, stationed within an amazing network inside a university with extraordinary interdisciplinary strengths. The Center serves as a resource to the University and is looked to by many in the field as its steward.

The new director will be charged with guiding the Center into its next iteration. The Center’s storied history, prestige, reputation, and impact of the past four decades provides a rare platform from which to build and expand the boundaries of applied clinical medical ethics that the Center has established to date. The new director will explore new areas of inquiry and engage the frontiers broached by the fast-paced changes and growing complexities precipitated by advances in medical care and health, as well as the corresponding implications for policy, society, and public health. The director will anticipate the ethical issues of the future and leverage the full force of the University’s intellectual horsepower and collaborative capacities in grappling with the implications of said issues, including their broader societal impact for diverse patients and populations.
