A lab in the Department of Biochemistry and Pathology at Stanford University is seeking a talented and motivated Research Scientist at 100% FTE for a 1 year fixed term (possibility for renewal) to lead a new project on symbiosis in algae. The broad focus of our research program is symbioses is in medically- and ecologically-important protists. We are interested in establishing lab-based systems to study diatom communities and symbioses. This will be critical to develop, in parallel with emerging new metagenomics datasets of plankton population in the ocean. One project will be a burgeoning nitrogen-fixing symbiont in a diatom that appears on its way to become a bona-fide organelle. This is an open area in the lab and we are recruiting someone who can work independently and contribute to development of new projects. Useful background/skills include metagenomics, oceanography, and algae culturing. The desired candidate is detail-oriented, independent, and conscientious, with excellent written and oral communication and interpersonal skills. The candidate should have sufficient understanding of the field of evolutionary biology and protistology.

A doctoral degree is required. The candidate should also have specific expertise in genome and phylogenetic analysis and a strong background in evolutionary biology or oceanography. The successful candidate must be technically rigorous and possess strong organizational skills. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills are imperative. The successful candidate must be able to work both independently and collaboratively and will likely have additional roles in the training of postdoctoral fellows and graduate students.
