Applications are invited for appointment as Professor/Associate Professor in Language Diversity and Documentation in the School of Humanities (Linguistics) (Ref.: 500057), to commence on January 1, 2021 or as soon as possible, on tenure terms.
Applicants should have a Ph.D. degree or equivalent in Linguistics, with strengths/expertise in language contact and multilingualism and/or linguistic typology and documentation, and a focus on non-Indo-European languages and little researched endangered languages, especially those of the Asia-Pacific region. Additional specialisation in another area of language sciences, especially evolutionary linguistics and/or cutting-edge technologies such as big data analysis and brain imaging will be an advantage.
The appointee is expected to develop a vigorous, independent research programme to excel in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, and to take on administrative duties. He/She should demonstrate leadership and mentorship qualities with a clear vision of the department leadership role, and a willingness to collaborate across academic units to enhance and promote interdisciplinary research. Total teaching load will be three to four courses per year, including introductory first-year courses. Information about the Department of Linguistics can be obtained at http://linguistics.hku.hk. A highly competitive salary commensurate with qualifications and experience will be offered, in addition to annual leave and medical benefits. At current rates, salaries tax does not exceed 15% of gross income. The appointment will attract University contribution to a retirement benefits scheme, totaling up to 15% of basic salary. Housing benefits will be provided as applicable.
