About the position

The offshore wind industry is a growing business. The installation costs have gradually decreased and has reached a level where unsubsidized offshore wind power plants are realistic. At the same time, the industry looks for new interesting areas and this will eventually lead to more offshore wind turbines (OWTs) mounted on floating foundation. The installation costs make up a significant part of the costs associated with developing a floating offshore wind farm.  As a part of SFI MOVE, we are exploring new alternative installation methods to be able to reduce the installation costs of floating OWTs.

These methods require new and accurate response-based criteria to become qualified alternatives for the offshore industry. Response-based criteria in this context mean maximum relative displacements, maximum impact velocities and maximum tension in lifting wires, to name the most relevant ones. The identified response-based criteria should be applied in a probabilistic oriented rule formulation where also the statistical uncertainty in weather and vessel response are brought into the perspective. To improve the confidence in the simulation and analysis tools used in the design of OWT and in particular related to installation of OWTs, a comparison and validation of simulated results with existing measurements is welcome. The results from the available measurement programmes for Hywind Scotland (like e.g. https://pod.ore.catapult.org.uk/source/equinor-hywind-scotland-windfarm) should be explored.

The goal of the postdoctoral position is to contribute to the development of improved rules and regulation for installation of offshore wind farms and to contribute to the validation of our simulation tools by comparing with measured response data.

Due to the interdisciplinary nature of the research we expect applicants to be willing and able to approach problems holistically. Experience from maritime projects will be essential, and close contact with the industry partners in the SFI MOVE project is necessary. You will report to Associate Professor Karl H Halse at NTNU, Dept. of Ocean Operations and Civil Engineering.

The position is funded by the SFI MOVE project led by Prof. Hans Petter Hildre at the department of Ocean Operations and Civil Engineering. The workplace is at NTNU in Ålesund, where the candidate will be part of a research group with close connection to research groups at NTNU and SINTEF Ocean in Trondheim.

Duties of the position

  • Research work in collaboration with the other members of the research group
  • Development of response-based criteria for installation of OWTs from floating installation vessels
  • Propose new rule formulations for design verification
  • Dissemination of results

Required selection criteria

Postdoctoral fellow:

A postdoctoral research fellowships is a qualification position in which the main objective is qualification for work in academic positions. You must have completed a Norwegian doctoral degree in Marine Technology, Ocean Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or Civil Engineering or corresponding foreign doctoral degree recognized as equivalent to a Norwegian doctoral degree is required.

If, for any reason, you have taken a career break or have had an atypical career and wish to disclose this in your application, the selection committee will take this into account, recognizing that the quantity of your research may be reduced as a result.

The appointment is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants and national guidelines for appointment as PhD, post doctor and research assistant.

  • Excellent knowledge of modelling and analysis of wave-induced response of floating structures
  • Experience with probabilistic modelling and the application of Load and Resistance Factor Design (LRFD)
  • Familiar with cybernetics and control theory applied to motion-compensation
  • Excellent English skills, written and spoken, are required. Applicants from non-English speak countries outside Europe must present an official language test report. The acceptable tests are TOEFL, IELTS, and Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English (CAE) or Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE). Minimum scores are:  TOEFL: 600 / writing 4.5 (paper-based test), 92 / writing 22 (internet-based test).  IELTS: 6.5, with no section lower than 5.5 (only Academic IELTS test accepted). CAE/CPE: grade B or A

Preferred selection criteria

  • Academic results, publications, relevant specialization, work or research experience, personal qualifications, and motivation and a desire to make an impact on the development of rational methods for safe design against accidental impacts will be considered when evaluating the applicants.
  • Norwegian language skills will be a benefit to qualify for teaching

Salary and conditions

Postdoctoral fellowship:

The employment period is 2 years.

Postdoctoral candidates are placed in code 1352, and are normally remunerated at gross from NOK 542 400 per annum before tax, depending on qualifications and seniority. From the salary, 2% is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.

The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants, and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology. Candidates who by assessment of the application and attachment are seen to conflict with the criteria in the latter law will be prohibited from recruitment to NTNU. After the appointment you must assume that there may be changes in the area of work.

It is a prerequisite you can be present at and accessible to the institution on a daily basis.
