Job Description Summary

The Center for Teaching and Learning works to help instructors at every level at Penn excel in their teaching, to enhance the culture of teaching at the university, and, in turn, to increase the quality of education at Penn. The Associate Director will contribute to all aspects of the center, working both independently and as part of a team to support teaching at the University of Pennsylvania. The Associate Director will particularly contribute to the center’s work supporting STEM teaching at Penn. This position will take part in programming, including, but not limited to: organizing and leading discussions and workshops on teaching; consulting with instructors and observing classes; supporting specific teaching initiatives; and communicating with groups throughout Penn to develop and coordinate teaching programs. This position will support faculty in a variety of schools and disciplines, as well as contribute to programming for graduate students and postdoctoral fellows.

Job Duties:

  • Assist director and work with other CTL staff and independently in planning, developing and implementing programs for the improvement of teaching.
  • Work with assigned schools to identify their teaching needs and to design programs to meet those needs.
  • Organize, lead or participate in teaching workshops and discussions.
  • Consult with individual instructors on teaching; observe classes and provide feedback.
  • Contribute to the CTL team's programs for graduate students.
  • Provide organizational and administrative support for the Center’s activities. Communicate about Center’s programs.
  • Communicate across Penn – including with instructors, departments, administrators and resource centers – to coordinate support for teaching.

Qualifications:

Ph.D. strongly preferred; Master's degree required, plus a minimum of 2-3 years related experience. Must have teaching experience at the college level, experience in and ideas about teacher development, ability to develop and administer teaching improvement programs, and the ability to work with a variety of disciplines and teaching styles. Sensitivity to the personal issues related to inclusive teaching and faculty development. Excellent communication skills. The ideal candidate will have expertise in a STEM field and one or more of the following areas – active learning, teaching large classes, mentorship of student research – and should be skilled with the use of technology in teaching. Candidates should bring both the ability to engage with faculty and an interest in research-informed practices. This position may also be eligible to teach one course a year at Penn.
