Stanford’s Center for Innovation in Global Health  (CIGH) is committed to increasing wellbeing, world-wide. With 180 global health faculty fellows from all seven schools within the university, we share knowledge, equip leaders and build interdisciplinary teams to address urgent global health challenges and achieve health equity. We focus our research and educational programs in three main areas--21st century leadership, human and planetary health, and vulnerable populations--and we partner with local organizations around the world to ensure that Stanford's commitment to excellence extends well beyond our campus.

We are seeking a dynamic, experienced Communications Manager to lead strategic communications for the Center. Primary responsibilities include leading content development, outreach and promotions, brand management and visibility, and program management. The candidate will come with experience in developing and implementing long and short-term strategic global health or international development communications plans, and the ability to make strategic decisions regarding key messages and engagement opportunities that amplify and promote global health work at Stanford. The Manager will write and publish news stories and multimedia content, will manage the Center’s website and social media accounts, will produce a bi-weekly newsletter in MailChimp, will support Center Leadership in preparing for speaking engagements and media opportunities, and will build and maintain communications partnerships internally at Stanford and with external global health partners too. The Manager will have an exciting opportunity to work with Stanford’s Global Health Leadership to run a high-profile strategic communications portfolio that is dedicated to training and research in global health, and ultimately improving global health equity.

Duties include:

  • Provide public relations support for audiences that are both internal and external to the university.
  • Plan and execute activities to support CIGH’s public relations objectives.
  • Develop, execute and oversee written communications of moderate complexity, including presentations, speeches, news stories, web content, talking points, and correspondence and social media posts.
  • Build and maintain relationships with internal and external partners.
  • Participate in regular meetings of key researchers with media relations needs to develop strategies and tactics for facilitating effective communications.
  • Identify and maintain professional relationships with key press, policy influencers and community leaders.
  • Prepare content for internal or external newsletters. Understand email and digital content distribution.
  • Assist in developing strategies for brand managements, reputation management and issues management of moderate complexity.
  • Assist with the design and implementation of effective constituent communications programs and social media strategies.
  • Serve as a project leader for public relations activities of small to moderate complexity.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Expertise in global health and specifically the global health advocacy and communications space, including strategic partners (e.g. Health UN Agencies, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation), and massive campaigns (e.g. Sustainable Development Goals, Universal Health Coverage goals).

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE (REQUIRED):

  • Bachelor's degree and five years of relevant experience or combination of education and relevant experience.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (REQUIRED):

  • Skills in brand development and brand management, ideally with an organization or University working in global health, international development or another mission-driven effort.
  • Excellent written communication skills, reporting skills, and advanced skills in conceptual editing, copy editing, and proof reading.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and build strategic partnerships, including with internal communications groups across campus.
  • Skills and expertise in social media marketing and partner engagement.
  • Skills in data visualization and creating infographics. Ability to do light graphic design using InDesign.
  • Ability to manage a website in Wordpress.
  • Experience with email marketing and newsletter production using MailChimp.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills in working with a variety of people.
  • Capacity to write and synthesize materials and communicate information in a manner easily understood.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish priorities, manage shifting priorities, and handle numerous time-sensitive projects with multiple deadlines.
  • Ability to accomplish goals working through formal and informal channels, with diplomacy and tactfulness.
  • Demonstrated creativity, problem solving, critical analysis, initiative, judgment and, decision-making skills.
  • Solid planning, self-management and organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated experience working independently and as part of a team.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*:

  • Constantly perform desk-based computer tasks.
  • Frequently stand/walk, sit, use a telephone, grasp lightly/fine manipulation, speaking.
  • Occasionally grasp forcefully, writing by hand.
  • Rarely sort/file paperwork.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Occasional work on evenings and weekends.
