This is an opportunity to work on the H2020 project entitled ‘A smart self-monitoring composite tool for aerospace composite manufacturing using silicon photonic multi-sensors embedded using through-thickness reinforcement techniques (SEER)’.

Cranfield Manufacturing is one of the eight themes at Cranfield University offering world-class and niche post-graduate level research, education, training and consultancy. We are unique in our multi-disciplinary approach by bringing together design, materials’ technology and management expertise. We link fundamental materials research with manufacturing to develop novel technologies and improve the science base of the manufacturing research. Our capabilities are unique, with a focus on simulation and modelling, and sustainability. They also include work in composite manufacture, metallic glasses, nano-materials (graphene, coatings and sensors), low energy casting, thermal barrier coatings and Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing (WAAM).
This project is a joint project in collaboration with TWI (UK), Loiretech (France), Aernnova (Spain), IMEC (Belgium), Airtificial (Spain), NTU Athens (Greece) and Brunel University (UK). The focus is on the development of a new method for insertion of through thickness reinforcement element, which will be housing optical sensors used for process monitoring, and also addresses simulation developments for the use of sensor signals form process control. We are interested in hearing from you if you have extensive knowledge and experience in this area and you must also have a PhD (or are close to completion) in Materials, Manufacturing or Composites (or a similar field).
In addition to research & simulation activities, the successful applicant will work closely with project partners, present the outcomes of their research in project meetings and prepare deliverable reports and journal publications.
