HAI DIRECTOR OF PROGRAMS AND COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

Join the rapidly growing Stanford Institute for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence (“HAI” - hai.stanford.edu). The HAI team is seeking an experienced marketing leader to assess, develop and execute a world-class set of products and programs to build and engage with HAI’s key communities and constituents. These efforts will create strong and mutually beneficial relationships with internal and external groups and will help grow HAI’s position as a partner of choice for academia, industry, government, and civil society. You will collaborate with all levels of stakeholders to define and develop HAI’s engagement strategy and its programmatic execution. You will take into account the global AI landscape, topics of relevance and the specific needs of internal and external audiences to deliver a set of unique products and programs that meet and exceed the expectations of our various communities. These communities start with Stanford academics, researchers and students and extend to industry, policymakers, journalists and the informed readers globally.

The Director of Programs & Community Engagement will manage a small team to identify and prioritize HAI’s constituents and their needs and will work with partner organizations across campus and beyond, overseeing collaborations with faculty, fellows, researchers, and staff to create awareness and consideration for engaging with HAI. The Director of Programs & Community Engagement will also have a leadership role in creating and delivering to the existing HAI corporate and foundation member benefits, while creating new content and programs to enable HAI outreach strategy. 

HAI Director of Programs & Community Engagement will report to the HAI Managing Director and will coordinate with other members of the HAI team, the faculty, the Office of Development and various policy institutes as appropriate to maximize delivering benefits to HAI’s expanding community.

JOB PURPOSE

Develop, execute and oversee a proactive strategy coupled with appropriate products and programs, aimed at building awareness, consideration and engagement while elevating the Institute’s national and international reputation as a global center of excellence and partner of choice for academics, civil society, governments, industry, journalists, and the broader public. Collaborate with all stakeholders internal to the university as well as partners and external audiences to understand and prioritize the needs and requirements of these constituents. Manage the creation, updating and management of all HAI’s internal and external product efforts inclusive of content, events and programs to meet business objectives.

Oversees the development and implementation of the entire product or program portfolio for the organization. Collaborate with stakeholders at all levels to define strategy for new products/ programs. Responsible for meeting all business objectives. Develop and mentor staff, providing opportunities for professional growth.

CORE DUTIES:

  • Develop a strategic vision and roadmap for accomplishing HAI goals via product and program initiatives, geared to increasing HAI’s impact and footprint among partners and our internal and external community members.
    ◦ Contribute to devising and implementing efficient and effective means of communicating various program offerings, highlighting the innovations and academic excellence of HAI’s areas of expertise to internal Stanford audiences, the general public, the media, alumni, prospective and admitted students, faculty, staff, and current students.
  • Drive business development strategy to meet portfolio goals.
  • ◦ Create, manage and modify a portfolio of products and programs over time to deliver the most positive impact for different facets of HAI efforts.
  • Lead research and analysis efforts. Guide organization to use the results strategically.
  • ◦ Identify and prioritize the needs of key constituents regularly and build awareness of HAI offerings across these groups. Modify programs as needed.
  • ◦ Measure the plan's impact on and contribution to, HAI’s brand, reach and reputation. Cooperate closely with key faculty, researchers, external parties and program creators to deliver valuable programs for HAI partners and communities. 
  • Participate in university-wide and/or organization-wide initiatives and cross-functional teams. Establish the organization as a strategic partner and thought leader.
  • ◦ Identify and nurture communities of importance to HAI’s mission internally and externally by delivering specific programs that match their needs. Lead, manage and expand HAI’s engagement with these communities.
  • Oversee the department's vendor relationships.
  • Oversee multiple program budgets
  • Set departmental budget, goals and objectives in alignment with organizational goals.
  • Manage the work of other employees, make hiring decisions, provide coaching, training and mentoring, manage performance and determine staffing needs.
  • ◦ Contribute to building a culture of positive coaching and mentoring to grow new talent for HAI.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Education & Experience:

Bachelor's degree and eight years of relevant experience or a combination of education and relevant experience is required. Preferably ten years of relevant experience/experience. Product Management, Product Marketing and Engineering background in artificial intelligence is highly desirable. Work experience in entrepreneurial environments is a plus.

  • Proven track record of exceeding business goals.
    • Track record of creating and assessing a set of successful products and programs in line with business objectives.
  • Demonstrated experience managing complex budgets requiring excellent analytical skills.
    • A metrics-driven mentality
  • Exceptional written and oral communication and presentation skills.
    • Capacity to write and synthesize complex materials and communicate highly technical information in a manner easily understood.
  • Demonstrated experience presenting to senior management.
  • Skilled at developing a staff of professionals. Includes selection, motivation, and leadership of staff, as well as evaluation and development.
    • Ability to motivate, develop and train staff as well as external resources.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Fluency and general knowledge of the technology industry.
  • Familiarity and ideally fluency with artificial intelligence via product management roles is highly desirable.
  • Curiosity; an interest and an ability to learn new concepts.
  • Excellent writer who can crystallize complex subject matter quickly and concisely.
  • Confidence and grace under pressure. 
  • Creativity in problem solving as well as creating new content.
  • Ability and ideally experience in working with faculty and researchers to deliver complex multi-stakeholder workshops.
  • Inspire and manage creative agencies and individual contributors to create unique and meaningful programs.
  • Dependability meeting deadlines in tight timeframes.
  • Judgement on how to handle nuanced conversations and topics under public scrutiny.
  • Fast-thinker who can solve problems both alone and with teammates in real-time.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*:

  • Constantly perform desk-based computer tasks.
  • Frequently stand/walk, sit, use a telephone, grasp lightly/fine manipulation, speaking.
  • Occasionally grasp forcefully, writing by hand.
  • Rarely sort/file paperwork.
