About the position

We have a vacancy for a position as Postdoctoral Fellow within the research area of “Heat pumping systems utilizing natural working fluids”, at the Department of Energy and Process Engineering (EPT).

The position is supported by the IPN research project “Free2Heat” (Development of efficient two-phase heat pump for industrial steam production), financed by the Research Council of Norway and an industrial partner from the energy and renewable energy sector. The project is coordinated by SINTEF Energy. The overall idea of the project is to develop a high temperature two-phase heat pump that can replace fossil fuel-fired steam boilers. At present, the energy for the process industry is mainly supplied from fossil-fueled energy sources (e.g. petrol or gas boilers) which contribute significantly to greenhouse gas emissions. High temperature heat pumps have been identified as a possible measure to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, recover waste heat and reduce specific energy consumption. Many industrial processes also have a significant share of surplus energy from various process steps, such as drying, dehydration, distillation and evaporation where the temperature is too low for direct reuse and thus goes to waste.

Today's compressor technology for heat pumps is not adapted to the waste heat sources from the process industry, which often consists of several phases, such as air, water vapor and oils.

The aim of the project is to further develop Tocircle's compressor technology into a sustainable, robust and efficient heat pump solution adapted to the process's waste heat sources in order to replace fossil-fueled energy sources and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

The position will be involved in the activity of testing and evaluation of the vane compressor and the design and development of the heat pump system. In the compressor test period, it can also be activity at the industrial partner site.

Professor Terese Løvås is the Head of the Department. The NTNU part of the project is led by Professor Trygve M. Eikevik, who will also be the supervisor.

Duties of the position

  • Set up research plans for the vane compressor and conduct them accordingly
  • Experimental investigation on vane compressor prototype
  • Validation of compressor and energy efficiency of total system
  • Evaluate different system integration with respect to feasibility and technical constraints
  • Evaluate process regulation and control design
  • Take lead in writing research papers under supervision
  • Guiding master students linked to the activity

The experiments can be done either at laboratory facilities in Trondheim or at the company lab facilities in Glomfjord. The candidate should expect periods in the lab.
