The Stanford Graduate School of Business Library invites applications and nominations for the position of Business Research Librarian in the Research and Discovery department. The department engages with faculty members, researchers, and students across the lifecycle of teaching, research and scholarship. Working in a startup type environment and joining an experienced team ready to share knowledge, the Business Research Librarian provides research support, instruction and outreach to the following groups:

  • GSB faculty.
  • The Master of Business Administration and Master of Science in Management programs at the Stanford Graduate School of Business.
  • The GSB PhD program, offering degrees in Accounting; Economic Analysis & Policy; Finance; Marketing; Operations, Information & Technology; Organizational Behavior; and Political Economics.
  • Researchers, members of the Stanford University community, and other library users.
  • This position will serve as a research subject librarian, conduct research consultations, offer course-related instruction and workshops, conduct outreach efforts to raise awareness of library resources and services, and maintain research guides and other support tools. A variety of additional duties may be assigned, based on the Librarian’s expertise and organizational needs.

The Business Research Librarian participates in outreach and research/instruction program planning and implementation for the GSB Library; participates in Library planning, committees, and task forces; and engages in campus, regional, and national organizations and collaborative activities. This individual is expected to participate in professional activities outside of the GSB Library and to monitor developments and best practices elsewhere to help ensure the excellence of the Library’s research support services and collections.

The Business Research Librarian will need to be able to adapt to change as the Library and School evolves. A strong candidate will be able to understand complex research problems and contextually curate information to assist in solving them. The position reports to the Manager of the Research and Discovery Department and may also serve as a member of the Collection Development Team. 

This position will be offered as either a Librarian 2 (Job Code 1782) or Librarian 3 (Job Code 1783) depending on the successful candidate's knowledge and work experience. The Core Duties below describe the Librarian 2 classification.

Your primary responsibilities include:

  • Applies knowledge of business, information and data resources to assist librarian patrons.
  • Assists patrons and staff with reference and research inquiries by searching relevant resources. Collaborates with library, faculty, and staff to provide service to users.
  • Serves on a team that coordinates and maintains licenses/NDAs for electronic databases and data sets.
  • Works with both internal (faculty, Stanford Libraries, staff, etc.) and external (private sector, government, nonprofit entities) stakeholders in building cooperative collections.
  • Reference Desk, email reference, chat reference duties.
  • Selects information resources and specialized data collections in a well-defined area, including responsibility for collections management and preservation decision-making.
  • Teaches classes, leads tours and/or gives demonstrations of information resources.
  • Works actively with primary clientele to explore and propose collaborative projects, options for new research services, and options for better integration between the GSB Library and other GSB units.
  • Evaluates and makes recommendations to management on plans, operations and policies for a library unit.
  • Carries out analytical work for significant aspects of the library’s operations.
  • Makes recommendations for the upgrade of electronic resource tools. 
  • Serves as liaison to Stanford GSB faculty.
  • May manage student staff or coordinate an area of Research & Discovery.
  • Be flexible to completing any other additional assigned duties.

To be successful in this position, you will bring:

  • The candidate should have an Advanced Degree in Library Science or a relevant academic discipline with demonstrated understanding of academic libraries and two or more years of relevant experience in a relevant library setting or a combination of education and relevant experience.
  • Knowledge of business, economics, or social science information and data.
  • Experience with relevant aspects of academic research including understanding of contemporary research practices, trends and emerging technologies.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the broad scope of library operations with ability to understand how their role interacts with the rest of the organization.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment and negotiate issues with people from different parts of the library.
  • Ability to identify challenges and opportunities, engage others in their resolution and recommend appropriate courses of action.
  • Demonstrated ability to evaluate online resources in terms of content quality, functionality and user interface issues.
  • Ability to independently perform complex job functions such as collection management reviews, preparation of major exhibits, developing policies for business practices.
  • Consistent display of strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to take a systems approach to complex problems, understanding interconnected issues at macro and micro levels.
  • Demonstrated bibliographic expertise or basic managerial/supervisory skills.

In addition, our preferred requirements include:

  • Preference will be given to a candidate with a second Masters or PhD.
  • Librarian 3 level requires an Advanced Degree in Library Science or a relevant academic discipline with demonstrated understanding of academic libraries and five years of experience in a relevant library setting with evidence of capacity to work at a high level of responsibility or a combination of education and relevant experience.
