About the position

A postdoc position is available at the Center of Quantum Spintronics which is part of the Department of Physics, NTNU in Trondheim, Norway.

The candidate will join and become part of an international research environment in quantum condensed matter theory and experiments.

The Postdoctoral position has a duration of three years.

About QuSpin

QuSpin carries out research in theoretical and experimental fields. QuSpin`s principal goal is to describe, characterize, and develop recently identified quantum approaches to control electric signals, conceptually different from those existing today.

QuSpin, a Center of Excellence, is funded by the Research Council of Norway. QuSpin is managed by a Center Director, a center coordinator and has four principal investigators. See http://www.ntnu.edu/quspin.

QuSpin currently has 8 professors, 4 associate professors, 3 permanent researchers, 27 PhD students and 6 postdoctoral researchers from 12 different nations working on various aspects of low dissipation spintronics.

The primary supervisor will be Prof. Justin Wells, and the position reports to the head of the Department of Physics, Prof. Erik Wahlström.

Duties of the position

The candidate will join the experimental activities at QuSpin. We have recently purchased and installed a customized spin-resolved momentum microscope, with capabilities for efficiently measuring band structure (with and without spin filtering), real-space “PEEM” style imaging (also with and without spin filtering, for example, allowing magnetic domains to be seen), work function mapping, etc. We have also developed a home-built flexible advanced preparation chamber (with thermal evaporators, Ar+ sputter gun, sample heating, cooling and storage, as well as in-situ XPS, UPS, LEED, AES and rudimentary ARPES).

It is anticipated that the successful candidate will be involved in the ongoing projects within the group and to also have significant flexibility to pursue their own spin/ARPES/PEEM/XPS/growth projects using our facilities (supplemented by synchrotron beam times and other external facility access when necessary).

The projects within the group are diverse and include nanoscale dopant structuring in silicon and diamond for quantum computer applications, electron-phonon (and other many body interactions) in 2D materials, magnetic doping and intercalation of layered materials, and manipulating electron-magnon interactions in related material.

The candidate is expected to participate in all aspects our home instrument; i.e. contribute to maintenance and upgrades, as well as performing their own measurements and projects, and assisting with the smooth running of the laboratory in general. They are also expected to take a central role in acquiring beamtime, planning and performing synchrotron projects, as well as taking a central role in data analysis and dissemination.

Required selection criteria

A postdoctoral research fellowships is a qualification position in which the main objective is qualification for work in academic positions. You must have completed a Norwegian doctoral degree in physics or corresponding foreign doctoral degree recognized as equivalent to a Norwegian doctoral degree is required.

If, for any reason, you have taken a career break or have had an atypical career and wish to disclose this in your application, the selection committee will take this into account, recognizing that the quantity of your research may be reduced as a result.

The appointment is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants and national guidelines for appointment as PhD, post doctor and research assistant

Preferred selection criteria

  • Strong background in condensed matter physics or related areas of quantum physics or nanotechnology. In particular, knowledge of ARPES and many body interactions (such as the electron-phonon interaction) is advantageous.
  • Experience and aptitude for experimental research, both for the home lab and for synchrotron-based projects. In particular, experience with momentum-microscopy (i.e. NanoEsca, or similar) is desirable.
  • Practical experience with running, maintaining or setting up experimental equipment and projects, and good problem-solving skills.
  • Competence with data analysis methods is desirable.
  • Good written and oral English language skills.

Personal characteristics

  • Actively participates in teams.
  • An ability to work independently, and to lead projects/activities.
  • Contributes to a supportive and friendly working environment.
  • Takes initiative and excels in problem solving.

In the evaluation of which candidate is best qualified, emphasis will be placed on education, experience and personal suitability, as well as motivation, in terms of the qualification requirements specified in the advertisement.

Salary and conditions

The employment period is 3 years.

Postdoctoral candidates are placed in code 1352, and are normally remunerated at gross from NOK 542 400 per annum before tax, depending on qualifications and seniority. From the salary, 2% is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.

The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants, and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology. Candidates who by assessment of the application and attachment are seen to conflict with the criteria in the latter law will be prohibited from recruitment to NTNU. After the appointment you must assume that there may be changes in the area of work.

It is a prerequisite you can be present at and accessible to the institution on a daily basis.

About the application

Publications and other scientific work must follow the application. Please note that applications are only evaluated based on the information available on the application deadline. You should ensure that your application shows clearly how your skills and experience meet the criteria which are set out above.

Joint works will be considered. If it is difficult to identify your contribution to joint works, you must attach a brief description of your participation.
