McMaster University

Vice-President (Research)

Advancing human and societal health and well-being
Ranked number one in Canada for research intensity, and second in the world by the Times Higher Education Impact Ranking for the impact universities are having in their communities and globally, McMaster University now seeks a new Vice-President (Research). With over 28,000 undergraduate and 5,000 graduate students, and 1,500 faculty members, McMaster is known for its deep commitment to creativity, innovation, and excellence as it advances human and societal health and well-being. The University is recognized internationally for its focus on students, and for its exceptional scholarship and teaching. McMaster is home to six Faculties (Business, Engineering, Health Sciences, Humanities, Social Sciences, and Science). The research enterprise has grown considerably over the last several years, with sponsored research income topping $370 million in 2019. For more information about McMaster, visit www.mcmaster.ca.

Committed to delivering on its promise of Truth and Reconciliation, McMaster University recognizes and acknowledges that it is located on the traditional territories of the Mississauga and Haudenosaunee nations, and within the lands protected by the Dish With One Spoon wampum agreement.  In keeping with its Statement on Building an Inclusive Community with a Shared Purpose, McMaster strives to embody the values of respect, integrity and collaboration, and has a strong commitment to diversity, employment equity, and inclusive excellence.

This is an exciting time to be joining McMaster, as the University prepares to launch its ambitious Brighter World Research Initiative, a bold campaign intended to attract resources and funding in support of interdisciplinary research. There is tremendous momentum and engagement across the campus, and the Vice-President (Research) will play a pivotal role in capitalizing on that momentum and advancing the entire dynamic research enterprise. The Vice-President (Research) is responsible for providing leadership to ensure the highest standards of scholarship across the campus, and for fostering collaborative and interdisciplinary research that has impact on the world stage. The Vice-President will build upon McMaster’s impressive research accomplishments, and will encourage further growth by strengthening the University’s success with commercialization and knowledge translation, and further developing its relationships with funding councils, industry partners, affiliated hospitals, and governments.

As a key member of McMaster’s executive team, the ideal candidate will have an outstanding record of scholarship, and a track record of mentoring and developing research excellence in faculty and students. The new Vice-President will have exceptional interpersonal skills, be highly innovative and strategic, and be ambitious in promoting McMaster’s standing as a leading research-intensive university engaged in high-quality scholarship of national and international significance.

The diversity of the McMaster workforce is at the core of our innovation and creativity and strengthens our research and teaching excellence. The University seeks qualified candidates who share our commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion. While all qualified candidates are invited to apply, we particularly welcome applications from women, persons with disabilities, First Nations, Métis and Inuit peoples, members of visible minorities, and LGBTQ+ persons. Job applicants requiring accommodation to participate in the hiring process should contact Odgers Berndtson to communicate accommodation needs.

All applicants are asked to complete a confidential Diversity Survey as part of the application submission process. The Survey questions are voluntary, and the entire Survey will take approximately two minutes to complete. All information collected is confidential and will be used to support efforts to broaden the diversity of the applicant pool and to promote a fair, equitable and inclusive talent acquisition process. The survey link will be provided at the time of application.

Canadians and permanent residents will be given priority.

Consideration of candidates will begin late April 2020, with the new Vice-President taking office July 2020, or as soon as possible afterwards. Nominations and expressions of interest may be sent to Colleen Keenan and/or Jason Murray at mcmastervpr@odgersberndtson.com
