Position Focus:

Reporting to the Manager of Database Administration and Platform Support, the Database Administrator (DBA) will be part of a team responsible for the administration of Yale’s centrally managed database platforms. The DBA will use their technical expertise and experience related to all aspects of database administration in Oracle, SQL Server, and MySQL. Work as part of a team of database administrators to ensure the security, health, efficiency, and reliability of our platforms in a dynamic 24-7-365 production data center and/or cloud hybrid environment. Work independently in the daily support of customer requests, incidents, problems and changes with Yale’s supported Database Platforms (Oracle, SQL Server, MySQL).

Collaborate with other departments in ITS on cross-team efforts and incident/problem resolution. Effectively prioritize and manage concurrent assignments, bringing them to successful completion with minimal supervision. Work closely with technical owners of applications to plan, standardize, and automate procedures. Provide performance tuning, capacity planning, disaster recovery planning, and automation guidance for systems and applications. Prepare and enhance documentation to support procedures in Database Administration. Participate in groups/committees related to processes, standards and best practices and ensure documentation is up to date. Participate in cross-functional technical projects that require foundational platform as a component of the solution. Work on scripting to automate some of our repeatable processes. Perform off-shift work and participate in rotating on-call coverage.

Essential Duties

  1. Configure database servers
  2. Monitor and maintain system health and security
  3. Design backup processes for server and associated data
  4. Create accounts for all users and assign security levels
  5. Establish a disaster recovery protocol
  6. Provide end-to-end technical support and problem resolution
  7. Schedule and perform regular server maintenance
  8. Create database management procedures
  9. Evaluate data analysis models and procedures
  10. Participate in department’s cross-training program

Required Education and Experience

Bachelor’s Degree in a related field, or the equivalent combination of experience & education.2 years’ professional experience or internship

Required Skill/Ability 1:

Proven experience with Oracle or SQL Server.

Required Skill/Ability 2:

Basic understanding of database security, disaster recovery and database backup procedures.

Required Skill/Ability 3:

Ability to work collaboratively and independently. Proven self-starter with ability to set priorities and manage workload. Proven ability to work in an environment where change control procedures e.g. ITIL are in use.

Required Skill/Ability 4:

Excellent communication and organizational skills. Demonstrated analytical and creative problem-solving skills. Demonstrated ability to develop and document complex procedures.

Required Skill/Ability 5:

Command of SQL and SQL server tools. Understanding of relational and dimensional data modeling.

Preferred Education, Experience and Skills:

Linux/platform, Ellucian Banner, Talend, Broadcom. Oracle RDBMS 12.2 or higher administration on Linux. SQL Server 2016, & 2017 administration. Installation & configuration of Oracle Fusion Middleware. Unix platforms including automation through scripting. PowerShell scripting and T-SQL. Oracle OEM configuration & monitoring. API Gateway(Layer7)Axway, MFT,AWS, Microsoft Azure.
