An exciting new opportunity has arisen for an experienced Bioinformatician to join the Australian National Phenome Centre (ANPC) – a newly established metabolic phenotyping facility involved in revolutionizing precision medicine and personalized health. Based at Harry Perkins Institute of Medical Research (adjacent to Fiona Stanley Hospital), the ANPC is a powerful resource that enables research to examine the complex interactions between genes, lifestyle and the environment. The ANPC is the first dedicated metabolic phenotyping facility in Australia and the largest in the world. It supports an extremely diverse array of spectroscopic instruments, including Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectrometers and Mass Spectrometers (400MHz – 800MHz NMRs, UPLC-QTOF/MS, FT-MS, TQ-MS, GC-QTOF/MS, etc).

The Role

Responsible to the Senior Operations Manager, this position is an opportunity for an experienced Bioinformatician or researcher to join a truly unique national facility under the scientific leadership of Professor Jeremy Nicholson (Executive Director of the ANPC and the Pro Vice Chancellor Health Futures Institute) and Professor Elaine Holmes (WA Premier’s Fellow in Phenomics and Systems Medicine).

The position of Bioinformatician is a unique role required to develop and apply high-fidelity computational and statistical modelling pipelines for large-scale metabolic phenotyping. The position is based at the Australian National Phenome Centre in the Population Health Division. ANPC Bioinformaticians collate, manage and study metabolic phenotyping data derived in-house using dedicated databases and informatics pipelines; key duties include the application of data (pre-) processing workflows and to perform data modelling tasks for statistical evaluation, result visualisation and contextualisation within respective study frameworks.

Skills and Experience

The preferred candidate will be a highly motivated specialist who is passionate about research in metabolic phenotyping to deliver translational outcomes in precision medicine and personalised health. The ANPC Bioinformatician is PhD qualified (or possessing equivalent work experience) in chemistry, biology or computer science with a focus on bioinformatics, metabolomics, analytical chemistry or a related field.

 You will be experienced in the following:

• Demonstrated ability to develop and apply new methods and pipelines for processing or biostatistical interrogation of data derived from Nuclear magnetic resonance and mass spectrometry,
• Proficiency in programming languages such as R, Python, MATLAB and JavaScript,
• Analysis of large-scale data sets, preferably of clinical origin,
• Application of statistical methods suitable for omics data (principal components analysis and related supervised methods, etc)
• Strong organisational skills required to coordinate projects, including the accurate maintenance of records,
• Strong communications skills required to articulate technical objectives and translate findings to other researchers,
