Job Description Summary

The Division of Facilities and Real Estate Services (FRES) provides the expertise, business process, policies and standards required to plan, design, construct, operate, maintain and renew the physical assets of the University, excluding the health system. In addition, the Division, comprised of approximately five Departments, is responsible for the strategic planning, management and operation of non-academic University property, and collaborating with the neighborhood to create a safe, diverse and economically vibrant destination. With close to 12M square feet of space, FRES maintains 186 buildings on a campus of 276 acres, completes over 60,000 maintenance requests per year, and starts approximately 250 projects a year. FRES is comprised of the following Departments: Administration, Office of the University Architect, Design and Construction, Real Estate, Operations and Maintenance.

The University of Pennsylvania is implementing a campus transformation entitled Penn Connects (http://www.pennconnects.upenn.edu). This comprehensive, award winning effort is expanding the campus over the next 20 years, including the construction of new academic research and recreational facilities. Job Description

Duties

 

The Environmental Graphic Designer in the Office of the University Architect for the Division of Facilities and Real Estate Services reports to the University Architect. Design, create, and maintain environmental and wayfinding signage, campus maps, and related graphic imagery, including production of scaled specification drawings. Collaborate closely with signage fabricators and installers. Manage and administer signage policies across the campus, which includes regular campus surveys to ensure the consistency and maintenance of existing signage, conformance of temporary signage, and in general support the quality of the exterior graphic environment of the campus. Design responsibilities will frequently include development of donor recognition signage proposals, typically presented in photo realistic mockup, and often needed to be produced within very tight time frames. Take photos for the Division which includes the website, construction documentation, cataloguing, and other tasks. Work with other departments to produce informational graphics, window graphics, banners, brochures, advertising, and other marketing materials. Perform other duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications

 

  • Bachelor's degree and 5 to 7 years of experience in Graphic Design, Commercial Art, Visual Communications or Computer Graphics or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Knowledge of and proficiency with Adobe Creative Suite is required. 
  • ACD Canvas or equivalent drafting software experience preferred.  
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office products and relational databases is a plus.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of graphic design principles, a wide variety of media, and production methods.
  • Experience with signage and three-dimensional design and fabrication. Well-developed page layout and creative design skills for print.
