Job Description Summary

The University of Pennsylvania Libraries seeks an experienced and strategic professional to coordinate support for copyright, information policy, and related scholarly communications activities on Penn’s campus. Reporting to the Associate University Librarian for Collections and Scholarly Communications, the Assistant General Counsel/Copyright Advisor serves as the Libraries’ lead representative to coordinate with the University’s Office of General Counsel and as the Libraries’ expert on questions of copyright and information policy. Working closely with library colleagues, the incumbent will lead efforts to offer training and consultative services for the university community about copyright and intellectual property issues and their impact on the nature and conduct of scholarly inquiry and instruction. In addition, the Assistant General Counsel/Copyright Advisor will aid in writing policy and advising on issues of fair use, information policy, and patron privacy, particularly related to collections, access, and information resource contracts, and will help to develop documentation and best practices.  

Job Description

  • Leads copyright activities for the Libraries and services as lead copyright and information policy advisor for the University community.
  • Trains colleagues and maintains a robust program of author advisory services to campus and collaborates with fifty subject librarians to implement and teach education programs and curricula to faculty, students, researchers, and staff on issues of copyright, fair use, author rights, and information law.
  • Serve as the Libraries’ lead representative to coordinate with the University’s Office of General Counsel and as the Libraries’ expert on questions of copyright and information policy.
  • Establishes and implements a program to triage questions and issues around copyright and information policy from faculty and students up through subject librarians.
  • Monitors national information policy issues, informs and educates the Penn community on their significance and participates in campus efforts to ensure that faculty, students and staff retain the full benefits of the current and evolving intellectual property regime.
  • Advises on issues of fair use, information policy, and patron privacy, particularly related to collections, access, and information resource contracts.

QUALIFICATIONS:

A J.D. and three years of related experience is required; an additional graduate degree or formal training and/or experience in library and archives is preferred. The successful candidate will have a track record of progressively responsible and productive experience working in information policy or copyright law.
