The Pediatric Brain Tumor Division in the Department of Neurology is seeking an Assistant Clinical Research Coordinator to perform support duties related to clinical research. The candidate will work under the direct supervision of the principal investigator at Stanford University/Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital.

The Monje Lab has been performing early postmortem pediatric brain tumor tissue recoveries for cell culture, xenograft models and genomics since 2009. These efforts have enabled us to generate some of the first patient-derived cell cultures and xenografts models of pediatric diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma, pediatric spinal cord glioma and pediatric glioblastoma. We have shared these invaluable patient-derived cell cultures with over 100 labs world-wide and regularly contribute tissue to childhood cancer tissue repositories. We now seek to expand these efforts to include all forms of pediatric brain tumors

Duties include:

  • Perform clerical duties in the preparation of regulatory documents. Maintain all forms and documents, including consent forms and master subject logs. File all appropriate correspondence.
  • Prepare, process, and ship specimens/samples accurately under well-defined requirements.
  • Order and maintain equipment and supplies.
  • Process thank you letters to subjects upon completion of trial activities. Assist with post-study activities, as needed.
  • Logistical coordination for tissue procurement:
  • Coordinate with hospice.
  • Identify and coordinate with a neuropathologist/pathology technician.
  • Prepare and send tissue collection kit.
  • Coordinate with the funeral home.
  • Coordinate with the courier.
  • For biopsy cases, coordinate with neuropathology and surgical staff.
  • Tissue processing and organization:
  • Help process the tissue for cell culture, store samples of frozen and fixed tissue.
  • Take fixed brain and representative tumor sample to neuropathology for formal autopsy evaluation.
  • Maintain up to date records of tissue samples together with de-identified clinical data.
  • Maintain records of tissue sample and cell line distribution.
  • In locked drawer on paper, maintain records of consent forms, autopsy reports, contact info for family to share research updates.
  • Tissue Distribution:
  • Patient-derived cell line sharing.
  • Materials transfer agreements.
  • Send cell culture protocols and STR fingerprint info.
  • Dry ice shipping nationally and internationally.
  • Record keeping of each cell line’s distribution.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Will need to be capable of sterile tissue handling.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE (REQUIRED):

  • Two-year college degree and one year of relevant experience or an equivalent combination of experience, education, and training.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (REQUIRED):

  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Meticulous organizational skills.
  • Diligent record-keeping.
  • Good problem solving.
  • General knowledge of medical terminology.

CERTIFICATIONS & LICENSES:

  • Working toward certification(s) to perform basic human tissue-related functions such as dry ice shipping, biosafety competence

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*:

  • Frequently stand, walk, twist, bend, stoop, squat and use fine light/fine grasping.
  • Occasionally sit, reach above shoulders, perform desk based computer tasks, use a telephone and write by hand, lift, carry, push, and pull objects that weigh up to 40 pounds.
  • Rarely kneel, crawl, climb ladders, grasp forcefully, sort and file paperwork or parts, rarely lift, carry, push, and pull objects that weigh 40 pounds or more.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
