Job Purpose

Under the supervision of the Head of Technical Services of the East Asia Library, the Chinese Technical Services Librarian is responsible for cataloging Chinese language materials in all formats, and supervises the technical services team of Chinese materials. The Librarian should bring to this position a thorough understanding of latest cataloging rules and tools. She/he should be knowledgeable about all aspects of the acquisitions workflows in a research library setting and be capable of supervising acquisition workflows, including ordering, receiving, claiming, serials check-in, outsourcing management and reports.

Core Duties

  • Lead and supervise the team of Chinese technical services (currently 2.25 FTEs).
  • Perform original cataloging of Chinese language materials in all formats, including rare Chinese books, electronic resources, serials, photographs, maps, microforms, and archival materials, by applying AACRII rev. and the LCRIs, or RDA and the LC-PCC PS. Perform authority work as appropriate.
  • Perform complex copy cataloging; produce MARC records by reviewing and updating other libraries' partial records lacking subject headings or classification numbers.
  • Monitor the quality of copy cataloging performed by the supporting staff.
  • Perform record maintenance and solve errors in bibliographic and holdings records.
  • Manage outsourced cataloging projects for the Chinese collection.
  • Plan and lead cataloging projects of the Chinese special collection.
  • Work closely with the main library’s Metadata Department to keep current on updates to the library system and processes. Communicating those changes to the supporting staff.
  • Supervise the workflow of Chinese acquisitions.
  • Train and supervise hourly assistants to perform pre-cataloging searching, copy cataloging, record maintenance, and holding updates in the library system.
  • Coordinate Chinese technical services team meetings.
  • Work with other branch libraries at Stanford on original cataloging of Chinese language materials.

Minimum Education and Experience Required:

  • MLS/MLIS degree from an ALA-accredited program or equivalent.

Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required:

  • Knowledge of MARC21, AACR2 II Rev., RDA and Library of Congress Rule Interpretations, LC subject headings, and appropriate reference and bibliographic tools for cataloging Chinese materials.
  • Native or near-native proficiency in modern Chinese.
  • Basic reading knowledge of classical Chinese.
  • Familiarity with Chinese transliteration systems (both Pinyin and Wade-Giles systems).
  • Knowledge of other metadata formats like Dublin Core or MODS.
  • Familiarity with online library cataloging systems, especially OCLC.
  • Ability to work with diverse library staff in a team environment.

Physical Requirements*:

  • Constantly sit, perform desk-based computer tasks.
  • Frequently twist/bend/stoop/squat, grasps lightly/fine manipulation, grasp forcefully, sort/file paperwork or parts, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds.
  • Occasionally stand/walk, reach/work above shoulders, writing by hand, kneel/crawl, climb (ladders, scaffolds, or other).
  • Rarely use a telephone, operate hand controls.
  • Must be able to push and maneuver a fully-loaded cart weighing up to 650 pounds that requires an initial push force up to 50 pounds.

Working Conditions:
