Position Focus:

Reporting to the Managing Editor, this Medical Writer/Journalist will write high-quality patient-friendly primers on conditions, treatments and procedures, similar to what one might find on WedMD, Cleveland Clinic, or Healthline.com. He or she may also occasionally produce feature text stories, slideshows and infographic content for the Yale Medicine website, as well as for its multiple social media channels. Please note that a writing sample will be required at point of interview. 

Principal Responsibilities:

Write ~1000-word primers on conditions, treatments and procedures, similar to what one might find on WedMD, Cleveland Clinic, or Healthline.com.
Repackage existing feature stories into short-form informational content tied to breaking news.
Author copy for slideshows, infographics and static website pages.
Produce and package content in a number of backend systems: YSM’s primary CMS and third-party platforms.
Take part in editorial planning.
Write long-form feature stories about the YSM community of patients, doctors and caregivers.
Write doctor profiles and similar types of short-form informational content.

Essential Duties

1.  Write long-form feature stories about the YSM community of patients, advocates, doctors and caregivers.
2.  Write doctor profiles, condition and disease primers, and similar types of short-form informational content.
3.  Author copy for photo galleries, infographics, and static website pages.
4.  Craft native copy for the YSM Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn social channels, as well as branded newsletters.
5.  Produce and package content in a number of backend systems: YSM’s primary CMS and third-party platforms, such as MailChimp and Medium.
6.  Take part in editorial planning. A constant stream of fresh ideas and perspectives are vital to success.
7.  Embrace analytics as a vital tool to understand and benchmark content consumption and user behavior, and work with senior staff to evolve his/her work per that feedback.

Required Education and Experience

Bachelor’s Degree and 3 years editorial/writing experience in a newsroom environment or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Consumer-facing background is required.

Required Skill/Ability 1:

Familiarity with medical/scientific terminology. Demonstrated ability to translate terminology into user-friendly language.

Required Skill/Ability 2:

Extreme attention to detail along with excellent oral and written communication skills. 

Required Skill/Ability 3:

Proven ability to manage several projects concurrently, while balancing competing priorities and deadlines. Extreme flexibility in work focus; ability to switch among several different projects without any adverse effects

Required Skill/Ability 4:

Ability to manage deadlines for multiple projects.

Preferred Education, Experience and Skills:

BS in Biology. Experience in health care marketing. Comfortable reading and translating clinical trials and peer-reviewed studies. Ability to interpret and summarize for a lay audience.
