About the opportunity 

The University of Sydney is welcoming applications for a Senior Research and Teaching Fellow to join the School of Chemistry, contributing to research in the areas of organic chemistry and/or chemical biology

The Senior Research and Teaching Fellow is expected to make a significant contribution to teaching and learning practice, design and evaluation within the School and Faculty while continuing to build their research contribution, expertise and impact. This is a 20% teaching, 80% research position.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Undertaking original research (either independently or as part of a team) within discipline or area of expertise
  • Building and maintaining a research profile which meets University expectations and standards – including (as appropriate) publication of book chapters/ peer-reviewed journal articles, producing conference/ seminar papers, generating research income including though applying for competitive grants – either independently or as part of a team (within the University or externally)
  • Developing research collaborations which will ultimately result in knowledge or technology transfer leading to commercialisation, improved policy or practice and/or enhancements to industry, the profession or the community
  • Applying learnings and knowledge from research and scholarly activity to inform educational practice and reform
  • Engaging in high-quality teaching and learning experiences (at undergraduate, honours and postgraduate level) which meet the University’s expectations and standards for education
  • Designing and delivering quality educational programs and experiences that support student needs and meet curriculum requirements
  • Engaging in research supervision, in accordance with the requirements and expectations of the School/ Faculty/ University

About you

  • PhD in organic chemistry, medicinal chemistry or chemical biology with a track record of published research
  • A developing research profile evidenced by original, high-quality research in the discipline or area of expertise.
  • Demonstrated experience in teaching and learning, and ability to contribute to teaching at undergraduate, honours and postgraduate levels in lecture, tutorial and laboratory settings
  • Experience in supervising or mentoring others and/or coordinating team activities
  • Demonstrated capacity to communicate effectively across a range of media and fora.

About us

The School of Chemistry is one of the largest Chemistry Schools in Australia. Undergraduate enrolments (Years 1 to 3) average 2,500 each semester, while there are more than 30 students enrolled in the Honours program and over 100 postgraduate students studying either Masters of PhD degrees, including a large cohort of International students. The Intermediate Chemistry program averages over 700 enrolments a year, while the Senior program averages over 450 enrolments. The School of Chemistry has 36 academic staff heading research groups and over 60 research fellows/postdoctoral staff. Some 40 administrative, technical and professional staff members provide teaching and research support to the School.

The Faculty of Science is one of six faculties operating within the University and includes the Schools of Chemistry, Geosciences, Life and Environmental Sciences, Mathematics & Statistics, Physics, Psychology, the Sydney School of Veterinary Science and the Unit for History and Philosophy of Science. The Faculty stewards a range of research entities including the Sydney Institute of Agriculture and the Lambert Initiative for Cannabinoid Therapeutics, and partners with University-wide research centres including the Charles Perkins Centre (CPC), the Brain and Mind Centre (BMC) and the Australian Institute for Nanoscale Science and Technology (AINST).
