The Department of Sociology and Social Policy brings together scholars with international research experience and publication record in major outlets in the area of sociology and social policy. The Department is a recipient of the University’s Research Excellence Award and Teaching Excellence Awards.  We offer teaching in Sociology and in Social Policy; and co-host the Health and Social Services Management stream with the Asia Pacific Institute of Ageing Studies. The Department hosts a newly established MSocSc Programme in Comparative Social Policy (International). The department has been successful in attracting MPhil and PhD students from around the world as well as Hong Kong PhD Fellows and winning external competitive grants. General Requirements

We are looking for active researchers who could contribute to the academic profile of the Department, supervise undergraduate and postgraduate students and teach courses offered by the Department in the areas of sociology, social policy, public health and social services. The courses currently offered by the Department are available on its website; and all courses are available at The normal teaching load is around 6 hours per week per semester. The appointees are expected to start in August 2020 or soon thereafter.

Applicants should have a PhD degree in sociology, social policy, or a related discipline, with a relevant teaching experience and publication record.  For the first post, we are looking for a scholar who works in the areas of social policy, global health, social services, social gerontology, and/or quantitative methods. For the second post, we are looking for a scholar who works in areas such as urban sociology, housing and society, digital society, smart cities, and/or social media research methods. A record of obtaining research grants and administrative experience will be distinct advantages. Applicants should provide information on their research interests and research plans, teaching portfolio, and evidence of quality teaching. Excellent communication and presentation skills are essential. The appointees are expected to have a strong commitment to teaching excellence and collegiality; engage actively in research and grant applications; and contribute to scholarly activities and service in the Department and the University. The conditions of appointment will be competitive. Remuneration will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. Fringe benefits include annual leave, medical and dental benefits, mandatory provident fund, gratuity, housing benefits and incoming passage and baggage allowance for the eligible appointees.

Appointments will normally be made on an initial contract of three years, which, subject to review and mutual agreement, may lead to longer-term appointments with possibility of consideration for substantiation.
