Position Focus:

Report to and under the general supervision of the Principal Investigator - Dr. Peggy Myung. This position is to work as Lab Manager in a laboratory studying the formation and regeneration of mouse and human hair follicles during normal skin growth and disease, which includes supervising and managing a team of laboratory scientists, graduate/undergraduate students, Postdocs/Postgrads, and interface with collaborators at Yale and across the country. The Research Associate will assist in, design, conduct and supervise experiments and also participate in the analysis of data sets generated. These experiments require a well-managed complex colony of mice, so breeding, tagging and genotyping will be required. This person will also interact with regulatory bodies to ensure compliance with safety, animal and patient issues.

This Research Associate may also participate in occasional visits to collaboration sites and conferences to learn new techniques for the laboratory. May perform other duties as required.

Essential Duties

  1. Recommends the design and implementation of procedures and protocols under the direction of a higher-level authority.
  2. Investigates, analyzes, and reaches preliminary scientific conclusions related to research planning.
  3. Ensures data results are compiled, analyzed, and presented properly.
  4. Analyzes, develops and interprets scientific results. Maintains clear documentation of results. Prepares scientific reports and papers for research proposals and published reports.
  5. Performs independent research and laboratory techniques and participates in experimental research planning.
  6. Interacts with internal contacts including the PI, research assistants, graduate students, Radiation Safety and Biological Safety officers, and Animal Care personnel to discuss and evaluate research results and to ensure the smooth and safe operation of the laboratory.
  7. Interacts with external contacts such as researchers at other institutions, staff at biotechnology and reagents companies to consult on research methods and to keep abreast of product information and developments.
  8. May perform other duties as assigned.

Required Education and Experience

Master’s Degree in a scientific discipline and one year experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Required Skill/Ability 1:

Proven experience in sterile tissue culture - cell line maintenance, transfection, and storage. Strong written and verbal communication skills. Ability to interface between the lab and IACUC and other regulatory agencies.

Required Skill/Ability 2:

Proven experience using mouse models, including techniques required for breeding, genotyping, gavage and intraperitoneal administration of drugs and procuring skin biopsies.

Required Skill/Ability 3:

Previous experience managing a lab. Ability to use standard microscopes (fluorescent, brightfield) to acquire and process images.

Required Skill/Ability 4:

Proven technical and scientific abilities to perform complex laboratory experiments and procedures. Ability to do standard immunofluorescent/immunohistochemical stains on tissue sections.

Required Skill/Ability 5:

Positive attitude, strong work ethic, and flexibility in work hours. Previous experience with using the following computer software tools: Excel, Word, Prism/Graphpad.

Preferred Education, Experience and Skills:

Master's Degree in Biology/Life Sciences preferred. Experience working as Lab Manager strongly preferred. Previous experience managing a team.
