The University of Manchester

Vice-Dean for Teaching, Learning and Students, Faculty of Biology, Medicine and Health

The University of Manchester enjoys a global reputation for its research and its innovative approach to learning, with an on-going £1 billion investment in facilities, staff and buildings. This builds on our tradition of success that stretches back over 180 years. The birth of the modern computer, the splitting of the atom, the founding principles of modern economics, the discovery of graphene, and the birthplace of chemical engineering – these and many more world changing innovations have their roots at our University. Manchester has the largest student community in the UK, with more than 28,000 undergraduates and 11,000 postgraduates attracted by the high international standing of the academic staff, by the superb research and teaching facilities, and by the cultural assets both of the university and the city of Manchester itself.

We are now seeking to appoint the Vice-Dean for Teaching, Learning and Students in the Faculty of Biology, Medicine and Health who will be responsible for the development of teaching, learning and the student experience for all taught programmes, both undergraduate and postgraduate. With 11,000 students, 3,200 staff, over 30 undergraduate courses and around 90 postgraduate taught courses, the Faculty integrates discovery biology, clinical application and patient care and is the largest supplier of healthcare graduates to the NHS in the north-west of England.

The Vice-Dean will provide leadership to all staff across the Faculty engaged in the learning and teaching agenda, ensuring an ongoing process of quality enhancement, improving the student learning experience, promoting inter-professional learning and supporting academics to deliver excellence in teaching. Candidates will bring a personal academic standing that commands the respect of colleagues and a track record of leadership and commitment to excellence in teaching and learning. The ability to create a sense of unity and common purpose will be essential, as will experience of implementing and managing change.

The post of Vice-Dean will be awarded for an initial period of five years with the option of extension by mutual agreement, with an underpinning substantive, permanent academic appointment. Following completion of the term as Vice-Dean, the post holder will revert to the substantive academic appointment on a full-time basis.
