Professor and Head of the Department of Conservation of Works of Art

Salary range: £68,218 - £78,481 p.a (with additional HoD allowance of £7,500)

The Courtauld Institute of Art is the UK’s leading institution for teaching and research into the History of Art and the conservation of works of art, and is also home to one of the finest small art museums in the world.

This professorial level appointment offers an exciting opportunity for an outstanding figure in the field of conservation of works of art / conservation science to lead the transformation and development of teaching and research in these areas, and to shape the future direction of its Conservation department.  The Courtauld runs two exceptional postgraduate programmes in the conservation of easel paintings and the conservation of wall painting, and the faculty and students produce world-leading research in both fields. The alumni of the two programmes are among the leading conservators of art in the world. You will provide academic leadership in a centre of critical importance to the discipline and to broader conservation interests.

Bringing together the staff who teach on the current two programmes to establish a new unified department, you will develop a research strategy with staff to create a stronger profile for conservation. This will attract students to both programmes, drive research and build links with internal colleagues and external professional and funding agencies.

You will also build on links with the Gallery and its collection, as well as other research and teaching programmes at The Courtauld, and lead the representation of Conservation across the institute.

You will be an internationally recognised authority in any field of the conservation of art or conservation science. You will have a strong profile of engagement with research and practical conservation and an awareness of the intellectual concerns and future development of the field. You will also have a strong track record in publication and experience of leading change, and an understanding of teaching, curriculum design and academic administration.
