Applications are invited for a permanent post of a Director, HSE National Genetic and Genomic Medicine Network, UCD / TCD Full Professor of Genetic and Genomic Medicine

The Universities and the Health Service Executive (HSE) are seeking to expand academic leadership in clinical genetics and genomics by attracting an outstanding clinician scientist with an internationally competitive research profile. All parties are committed to building a National Genetics and Genomic Medicine Network (NGGMN) within the HSE and collaborative academic programmes involving the community of academic staff and clinician scientists. The strategic objective is to establish evidence-based practice that ensures equity of access to high quality patient care.

Clinical

The NGGMN Director will lead the design, development and implementation of a nationwide network with the support of the Clinical Laboratory Director, NGGMN General Manager and the NGGMN Advisory Group. She/he will provide clinical expertise on genetic and genomics and ensure that best current practice in terms of genomic testing, value for money, patient support and planning for future developments are incorporated into the Network design and framework.
He/she will ensure that all relevant stakeholders in Hospital Groups, the National Cancer Control Programme, National Rare Diseases Office, National Clinical Programme for Pathology and Rare Diseases and all relevant specialties will be consulted as appropriate in the design and implementation of the Network. She/he will liaise with the Department of Health and the Health Information and Quality Authority on matters relating to Genetics and Genomics.

Research

The appointee will have an excellent, world-class track record in clinical genetics and/or genomics research, a proven ability to attract substantial extra-mural research funding and an ability to build and lead a productive research team. She/he will develop an internationally competitive programme of novel research and build research collaborations between TCD and UCD and with other investigators in the Universities, the health system and beyond. She/he will develop an appropriate research strategy to support the development of genomic medicine in Ireland. He/she will ensure appropriate Research Ethics Committees are consulted as required to support the clinical service design and associate research projects.
Teaching
The successful candidate will provide academic leadership in clinical genetics and genomics teaching at both an undergraduate and postgraduate level in both University College Dublin and Trinity College Dublin. The appointee will have experience in the design, development and delivery of high-quality educational programmes and be familiar with modern pedagogical methodologies.
The UCD / TCD Full Professor of Genetic and Genomic Medicine will be based at appropriate locations at or between the School's of Medicine, where she/he will be an academic leader working with other academic and clinical staff to oversee the design, delivery, assessment and quality of modules and programmes for undergraduate and graduate students.

Academic

Together with existing academic and clinical staff, the post holder will be expected to:

  • Build an internationally competitive clinical genetics or genomic medicine research group, attracting external peer-reviewed research funding and supervise to completion MD and/or PhD students.
  • Lead as necessary the area of Clinical Genetics within the Universities working with the other academic staff in both TCD and UCD to oversee the design, delivery, assessment and quality of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes.
  • Provide academic leadership nationally to promote and develop education of doctors and allied health professionals in the specialty of genomic medicine.
  • Contribute to postgraduate specialist medical education including, as appropriate, in higher specialist training through the Royal College of Physicians in Ireland or other relevant postgraduate training organisations.
  • Assume a broader academic leadership role within the respective Medical Schools, College and Faculty, Universities and represent the Universities as appropriate on national and international advisory boards and professional bodies.

Clinical

Together with existing academic and clinical staff, the post holder will be expected to:

  • Deliver a modern, professional and efficient clinical genetics and genomic medicine service within the Irish health system.
  • Contribute to the provision of high-quality, accessible evidence-based medicine to patients across the Irish health sector.
  • Participate in ward rounds, clinical conferences, outpatient clinics and an on-call clinical service rota as appropriate.
  • Supervise the training of non-consultant medical staff.
  • Participate in appropriate development activities to ensure the best possible clinical service is provided to patients.
  • Participate in quality assurance or accreditation initiatives in conjunction with clinical colleagues as required.
  • Undertake a leadership role within both Universities, their respective Hospital Groups and the Health Service Executive's National Genetics and Genomic Medicine Network.

Salary Scale: Health Service Executive - Academic Consultant Type B
Salary scale at the first point in scale or in line with current Government pay policy and commensurate with experience.
