The School of Law and Government:

The School of Law and Government is an ambitious, research-intensive school, consistently ranked in the global top 200 for politics by QS. It has a range of programmes at BA, MA, and PhD level. The School teaches a BA in International Relations, an interdisciplinary degree in ‘Economics, Politics and Law’, and offers Politics on the university’s Bachelor of Arts (Joint Honours) programme. It offers seven taught postgraduate programmes, including the MA in International Relations, the MA in International Security and Conflict Studies, the MSc in Public Policy, and the International Master in Security, Intelligence, and Strategic Studies, delivered jointly with the University of Glasgow, Charles University, Prague, and the University of Trento. The School has over forty research students and offers a structured PhD in Politics and International Relations.

The School of Law and Government intends to appoint an Assistant Professor in Chinese Politics or Foreign Policy, to begin on 1 September 2020. The successful candidate will be expected to play a role in the development and delivery of the School’s taught programmes and in the identification and delivery of new programmes in their specialist area. The School offers excellent opportunities for candidates to teach within their own area of research specialisation and to supervise PhD candidates. The School is dedicated to high quality research, expects its staff to publish regularly in leading journals and assists its staff in such work. We have led research programmes assisted by the Irish Research Council, the EU and other national and international funders.

Skills and Experience:

Applicants for the position must have completed a PhD in politics or international relations with a relevant focus. The successful candidate will have experience of university teaching at lecturer/assistant professor level on a full-time basis, will be able to convincingly demonstrate a strong dedication to academic research and will have a track-record of international peer-reviewed publications. The successful candidate should be capable of working in a team and contributing to developing the teaching and research agenda within the School, as well as assisting the School’s fund-raising activities through grant applications.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Teaching and Learning

The successful candidate will be required to contribute to the development, teaching, assessment, and administration of our modules across a range of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes:

• To include the design and delivery of modules on Chinese politics and/or foreign policy
• The design and delivery of other modules in politics, international relations, or public policy,
• Evaluating students on placement visits and writing reports,
• Contributing to the design, development, and management of future programmes and other developments in the fields of politics and area studies,
• Supervising undergraduate and postgraduate theses, and
• Contributing to the wider teaching of the School, as required by the Head.

Research and Scholarship

The successful candidate will be dedicated to high-quality research and publication in the field of Chinese of politics and/or foreign policy on an individual and a collaborative basis.

The successful candidate will be expected to:

• Publish articles in leading peer-review journals and/or books with high-profile publishers;
• Develop and assist research initiatives with the School Law and Government and the wider university;
• Apply for grants to contribute to the School’s research agenda; and
• Attract and supervise high-calibre PhD students.

Service and Contribution to University and Society

Activities taken on the successful candidate’s own initiative, or allocated by the Head of School, may include:

• Engaging with policy-makers and the media,
• Participating in school and university meetings,
• Representing the School in marketing and the recruitment of students,
• Developing relationships with stakeholders within and outside the University.

Mandatory training:

The postholder will be required to undertake the following mandatory compliance training: Orientation, Health & Safety, and Data Protection (GDPR). Other training may need to be undertaken when appropriate
