Applications are invited for appointments as Tenure-Track Associate Professor/Assistant Professor in the Department of Professional Legal Education (2 posts) (Ref.: 499514), to commence on September 1, 2020 or as soon as possible thereafter, on a three-year fixed-term basis, with the possibility of renewal and with consideration for tenure before the expiry of the second three-year fixed-term contract. Candidates with extensive experience and demonstrated outstanding academic achievement may be considered for appointment at Associate Professor level with direct tenure.

The Faculty of Law plays a leading role in legal education in Hong Kong and Asia through its various undergraduate, research postgraduate, and taught postgraduate programmes including the PCLL covering a wide range of legal subject areas.  It is the largest and oldest law teaching institution in Hong Kong, currently consisting of over 70 teaching members drawn from more than 17 jurisdictions worldwide, and over 1,500 undergraduate and postgraduate students.

Applicants should have a first degree and a postgraduate degree both in law, a professional qualification and experience in legal practice, preferably in Hong Kong. Applicants for Associate Professorship should be able to demonstrate excellence in teaching and research, whereas those for Assistant Professorship should be academically strong and able to demonstrate at least potential for excellence as teachers and researchers. Those who do not have a postgraduate degree in law are also encouraged to apply if there is evidence of a strong research and publication record and relevant experience in teaching, legal practice or the judiciary, or if they possess a postgraduate degree in a non-law discipline.

The appointees will be expected to make significant contributions to the Department’s research profile by producing high-quality research and actively participating in research communities within the Faculty. They will also be expected to contribute to the Faculty’s development and delivery of teaching, particularly on the PCLL. A highly competitive salary commensurate with qualifications and experience will be offered, in addition to annual leave and medical benefits.  At current rates, salaries tax does not exceed 15% of gross income.  The appointment will attract a contract-end gratuity and University contribution to a retirement benefits scheme, totalling up to 15% of basic salary.  Housing benefits will be provided as applicable.
