Regions in a Multipolar World Postdoctoral Fellowship

School Faculty of Arts and Sciences
Department/Area Weatherhead Center for International Affairs

Position Description

The Regions in a Multipolar World research cluster at the Weatherhead Center for International Affairs at Harvard University seeks a postdoctoral researcher for academic year 2020-2021 to work with the cluster’s principals (see below) on questions of regions and regionalism in the world, past and present.

About the cluster:

What brings together the cluster’s faculty participants, heterogeneous in disciplinary background and geographic expertise, is a shared curiosity about the organization of the international system at a time of transition. World regions lie at the heart of our collaboration. Our aim is to build intellectual bridges between the study of regions, the evolution of the world system, and shared dilemmas of governance.

The organizing questions we put forward include:

  • Is a “world of regions,” as it is sometimes phrased, indeed coming into being?
  • What factors account for the variation in regional relations from one part of the world to another, and over time in particular areas?
  • As the world becomes less US-centric, how can we expect the exercise of power in and over world regions to figure in the emergence of a multipolar global order?
  • What difference will developments at regional level, and linkages with system dynamics, make for the aggregate capacity to address urgent problems of transnational and global scope?

Faculty affiliates of the Regions cluster include Timothy Colton (Government Department. GSAS) and Meg Rithmire (HBS) as co-directors, alongside Pol Antras (Economics Department, GSAS), Tamar Herzog (History and HLS), Zoe Marks (HKS), Tarek Masoud (HKS), and Kathryn Sikkink (HKS).

Expectations:

The postdoctoral fellow will be housed by the Weatherhead Center with a total stipend of $70,000. Health insurance benefits will also be provided.
The fellow must reside in the greater Boston area for the duration of the appointment, which is July 1, 2020 through June 30, 2021.

Specifically, we envision the fellow’s intellectual tasks to be two-fold, and her/his time equally distributed between these tasks:

  1. Aggregating, wrangling, and analyzing data related to regions in the world. We have research assistants collecting data on topics such as regional identity, interactions (e.g. travel and tourism, cultural production and consumption), economic cooperation and interdependence, political affinities, and more. The fellow will help wrangle and analyze these data, marshalling them to answer questions of substantive importance.
  2. Collaborating with various permutations of faculty members on projects to advance the collective and the fellow’s own research agenda. Ideally, the successful applicant’s own research agenda includes questions of regional dynamics at a global or level or with regard to a specific geography. Our aim is to work toward joint publication, meaning the fellow will be expected to co-author with the faculty participants.

Qualifications:

Applicants must have completed all Ph.D. requirements (dissertation completed and filed) between May 2017 and July 2020. Preference will be given to applicants with a degree in social science or related fields whose research interests include regions or regionalism. A successful applicant must have training in quantitative data analysis.

Application Process:

To apply, you will be required to submit an online application on the Harvard portal. You are required to submit:

  • 1-2 page cover letter that briefly states your interest in the program, your background, and a summary of your research project
  • CV
  • 2 scholarly writing samples
  • Unofficial transcripts from all graduate-level degrees
  • Two letters of reference. Include contact information for the references and have them submit letters directly to the email below.

Application Deadline: March 1, 2020
