Job Description Summary

The Agatston Urban Nutrition Initiative (AUNI) is a major component of the University-Assisted Community Schools (UACS) program of the Netter Center for Community Partnerships. AUNI coordinators work as part of a team with other Netter Center UACS staff. AUNI engages, educates and empowers youth, university students, and community members in a comprehensive approach to community health improvement, particularly improvement in nutrition and obesity.

This is a direct service position that specifically focuses on the following activities: nutrition and garden education within public schools and community settings, CSA management, project based youth development activities including a high school summer program, improving physical activity levels, and increasing awareness and understanding of food systems. This position may also support AUNI’s Adult and Senior Nutrition Program (ASNP).  ASNP works with adults in a variety of venues, including senior centers, libraries, food pantries, and health care facilities to conduct healthy shopping, eating, and cooking workshops.

Job Description

Duties:

This is a production garden based position that is anchored in partnerships in schools to deliver effective nutrition education programming, manage AUNI’s CSA and food access initiatives, and develop and support community partnerships. Duties include management of a local high school garden, a small campus garden, a weekly CSA market, and indoor growing systems. AUNI coordinators also work with undergraduate fellows and work-study students to help develop, implement and expand this work.  Additionally, as part of AUNI’s annual summer partnership with the Philadelphia Youth Network, this position supervises a crew of high school students while implementing best practices in youth development.  There are weekly and monthly documentation and reporting requirements with time-sensitive deadlines. Occasionally, staff are asked to work evenings and/or weekends. Flexibility with weekly schedule is necessary.

Qualifications:

  • A Bachelor’s Degree and 1 to 3 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience is required.
  • Ability to work in a multicultural environment and interact respectfully with diverse groups is required.  
  • Experience in urban educational settings is required.  Experience growing intensively in urban spaces is required.  Farmers Market Experience required. Familiarity with indoor growing systems preferred.
  • Experience and training in nutrition or health education related subject is preferred.  Working knowledge of health disparities, and food systems preferred.  Should be familiar with challenges that impact urban populations.
  • Demonstrated experience of ability to work collaboratively with school and community based organizations. Experience implementing youth leadership programs is a plus.
  • The ideal candidate will be organized, detail-oriented, accurate, dependable, and flexible.

Physical Requirements:Typically sitting at a desk or table; occasional lifting 25 pounds or less. Working conditions include an office and outdoor exposure to weather.
