Job Description Summary

The Research Director (RD) is responsible for the leadership and management of the Wharton People Analytics (WPA) Research Team, which includes our research coordinators and data scientist. The RD works directly with research leads across WPA, including our faculty, post-doctoral and senior fellows, and the director of People Lab to facilitate all of WPA’s research endeavors. Reporting directly to the Executive Director of Wharton People Analytics, with oversight from Faculty Co-Director Cade Massey, the RD holds primary responsibility for research project management, ensuring the effective advancement of WPA’s  Faculty-led research agenda from concept generation all the way through to publication and reporting.

The RD serves as a primary ambassador for WPA to external organizations, and Penn/Wharton stakeholders. As such, the RD plays a significant role in vetting new partner organizations and collaborates with WPA faculty and research fellows to assess and catalyze potential research collaborations.

Candidates with a background in Organizational Behavior, Applied Psychology, and/or Organizational Psychology, who are experienced in and motivated by bringing research projects from conception to publication/implementation, are encouraged to apply. A PhD, while valued, is not required.

Job Description

Primary responsibilities/duties include:

  • Supervise research staff and students engaged in research projects and related Applied Insights Lab activities
  • Lead the daily operations of Wharton People Analytics (WPA) research portfolio to move studies from design through implementation, analysis, and write-up
  • Collaborate with the Faculty Co-Directors and WPA Executive Director to advance WPA's research agenda and strategic plan, including the development of the Applied Insights Lab, advancement of people analytics research done in conjunction with organizations, and the development of educational opportunities for Wharton and Penn students
  • Generate and disseminate WPA's research findings and related content through various publications and communications channels (e.g. HBR, LinkedIn, national conferences)
  • Build relationships and collaborate with researchers and external organizations to develop new research proposals and initiatives
  • Collaborate with staff across the University and within partner organizations to advance research initiatives

Qualifications

Master's degree (or doctorate) and 5-7 years experience or equivalent combination of education and experience required. The ideal candidate will have multiple background experiences including familiarity with academic research and research institutions and a familiarity with how things get done at a complex institution like Penn; a demonstrated capacity to partner on research with organizations outside of academia; a demonstrated capacity to cultivate relationships with world-class and multidisciplinary researchers; a demonstrated ability to conduct and connect academic research with practice, and proven ability to build and maintain networks of contacts in positions of power outside of academia; a demonstrated capacity for supervision of administrative and research assistants, and a creative and entrepreneurial approach to developing programs on a high-priority, high visibility endeavor. These requirements will demand a set of diverse skills including: strong written and verbal communication skills (required); excellent research skills (required); great management skills (required); exceptional interpersonal skills supporting collegiality with diverse partners (required), and attention to detail and fulfillment (required); ability to work independently and as part of a team (required); professional experience in a university setting (preferred).
