Job Description Summary

The Wharton Social Impact Initiative (WSII) leads the Wharton School’s work in impact investing, social entrepreneurship, and impact analytics. One of WSII’s core practices is to advance research and improve the state of knowledge on the business of social impact. To this end, WSII is conducting research on impact-focused private equity funds to explore their financial performance, social impact objectives, and organizational culture. In addition, WSII is leading or partnering on several other initiatives on finance and enterprise for social good.

The Research Coordinator will contribute to the development of the Wharton Social Impact Initiative’s multidisciplinary research agenda and larger body of work.

Job Description

This is an opportunity to learn about impact investing and social enterprise while becoming familiar with the technical and administrative aspects of rigorous academic research. The Research Coordinator will contribute to data collection, database management, and other research-related priorities. Responsibilities include but are not limited to—

  • Assisting with outreach to impact investing funds for data collection
  • Consulting on survey development and implementation
  • Analysis of both small and large data sets, including basic descriptive analysis and more sophisticated statistical procedures (cluster analysis, multilevel regression, etc.)
  • Conducting literature reviews for research initiatives as necessary
  • Monitoring, organizing, and cataloging data
  • Supervising research assistants
  • Promoting WSII’s data assets to the social enterprise and impact finance research community
  • Staying up to date on latest trends and developments in impact investing and related fields

Qualifications:

We are seeking a diverse range of candidates that meet many or all of the following attributes—

  • BA/BS and 1 -2 years of experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Interest and experience in research planning, data collection, and database management
  • Interest in finance and in the intersection of business and social impact
  • Experience conducting and writing literature reviews and synthesizing findings across disciplines
  • High proficiency in Excel
  • An orientation toward sales and relationship management (polished writing skills, warm and professional phone manner, high attention to detail)
  • Discretion and utmost integrity with sensitive information
  • Familiarity with finance and accounting is a plus
  • Familiarity with statistical programming software (R, SPSS, Stata, etc.) is a plus
